North America's strongest union.

About us

The Teamsters are one of North America’s largest, most diverse unions. In 1903, the Teamsters started as a merger of the two leading team driver associations. These drivers were the backbone of America’s robust economic growth, but they needed to organize to wrest their fair share from greedy corporations. Today, the Union’s task is exactly the same. The Teamsters are known as the champion of freight drivers and warehouse workers, but have organized workers in virtually every occupation imaginable, both professional and non-professional, private sector and public sector. Our 1.2 million members are public defenders in Minnesota; vegetable workers in California; sanitation workers in New York; brewers in St. Louis; newspaper workers in Seattle; construction workers in Las Vegas; zoo keepers in Pennsylvania; healthcare workers in Rhode Island; bakery workers in Maine; airline pilots, secretaries and police officers. Name the occupation and chances are we represent those workers somewhere. Teamsters stand ready to organize workers who want to bargain collectively. Once a contract is negotiated and signed, the Union works to enforce it—holding management’s feet to the fire and invoking contract grievance procedures if management chooses not to. Wages and benefits under Teamster contracts are markedly better than those of non-union employees in similar jobs. Teamster contracts are the guarantors of decent wages, fair promotion, health coverage, job security, paid time-off and retirement income. The Teamsters Union also performs vital tasks in such areas as pension management, safety & health, community outreach, governmental affairs and communications. For more than a century, the Teamsters have been a public voice for the rights and aspirations of working men and women and a key player in securing them.

  • As contract negotiations continue for 10,000 Teamsters aircraft technicians, United Airlines recently announced a $1.5 billion stock buyback program after posting over $14 billion in revenue in Q3. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien has released the following statement: “United Airlines just gave away its entire game. United blows $1.5 billion on stock buybacks while the carrier drags its feet in contract negotiations with the technicians who keep its planes and passengers safe. Like so many greedy employers today, United continues to put profits over people, and it’s disgusting,” O’Brien said. “Rank-and-file Teamsters are fighting hard for a record contract. Our members are the best aircraft maintenance technicians in the world, and they deserve industry-leading wages, benefits, and workplace protections. United putting its focus or its profits on anything other than rewarding workers is disgraceful.” Contract negotiations between the Teamsters and United Airlines will resume October 22 in Chicago.

  • Today, nearly 200 Teamsters gathered in Los Angeles for the Industrial Trades Division Conference. Rocco Calo, Director of the Teamsters Industrial Trades Division, welcomed attendees and gave an overview of the division’s priorities, including ongoing efforts to grow Teamsters density and secure strong agreements for its 93,000 members. “As the most diverse division in the Teamsters Union, we have the opportunity to continue to win industry-leading contracts in industries like parking, car rental, and laundry,” Calo said. “We will continue to fight for the best contracts with the wages, health and welfare, and retirement our members deserve.” Participants heard from General President Sean M. O’Brien, General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, division representatives, and International staff about the latest in the division, the importance of collaboration, and resources available to Teamsters affiliates. “Just last week here in California, Teamsters fought back and won a strong contract for 3,000 Teamsters at Hertz,” O’Brien said. “This agreement and the collaboration between the locals, the division, and the International should be a model for all our contracts and how to get them done. By working together and having members with the courage and conviction to fight, we secured a life-changing agreement.” “In addition to fighting against corporate greed and securing strong agreements for our current members, we’ve also been successful in growing the union,” Zuckerman said. “We got to 50,000 new members with key wins at Industrial Trades division employers like Aramark and Ryder. In continued collaboration and partnership with all of you here today, we are going to continue to organize more members, win more strikes, and ratify more historic contracts.” To end the day, Teamsters attended their first two rounds of workshops. Attendees will regroup tomorrow morning for the second day of the conference.

  • TEAMSTERS GATHER IN MINNEAPOLIS TO REVIEW STATE OF THE UNION Teamsters leaders, officers, business agents, and stewards from across the Midwest met in Minneapolis on Thursday for the third of the union’s biannual regional meetings. Focused on the growing strength and momentum of the International Union, speakers highlighted ongoing organizing efforts and contract battles – including key campaigns at Amazon, DHL, United Airlines, Costco, and other major employers – and the need to prioritize rank-and-file members' voices. The Central Region meeting comes just days after the union announced it has added 50,000 new members in the past two and a half years under the O’Brien-Zuckerman administration. “We are determined to keep making this union bigger, faster, and stronger,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “We’ve organized tens of thousands of new members, secured historic agreements, and shown the world that Teamsters won’t back down when it comes to protecting our members. We have the best leadership team we've ever had. I love the fact that we get up every single day to represent the most important people – the 1.3 million rank-and-file members that we have the privilege to represent.” Attendees heard reports from the General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman as well as updates from department leaders at the International, covering Organizing, Data and Contracts, Political and Legislative Action, Human Rights and Diversity, Training and Grants, and Strategic Initiatives. Regional insights were provided in opening remarks from International Vice President Tom Erickson, President of Teamsters Joint Council 32 and Teamsters Local 120, who focused on critical contract fights and organizing successes for Teamsters in the warehouse and logistics industries. The Central Region meeting is part of a series of fall meetings, with a final gathering set to take place in Dallas later this month.

  • The International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced today the union has grown by an astounding 50,000 new members in the last two-and-a-half years, a direct result of key investments in strategic organizing under Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman since March 2022. This summer alone, 10,000 workers organized with the Teamsters for the first time at a wide range of employers in traditional Teamsters industries like transportation and delivery, including at DHL, UNFI, UPS, and Sysco. Teamsters organizers have also found runaway success bringing more workers into the labor movement at once non-traditional companies, including Amazon, the American Red Cross, Costco, and cannabis dispensaries nationwide. “Since being elected to lead the Teamsters, our team has been determined to make this International Union bigger, faster, and stronger. These massive organizing numbers in such a short period of time are proof positive that the Teamsters are doing something right,” O’Brien said. “They’re also a reminder that American workers are fed up with corporate greed and the hallowing out of the middle class by Big Business and the political elite. We see workers fighting back in every state, taking hold of their futures, and joining the Teamsters in record numbers. We will proudly represent everyone and continue to win stronger industry standards and richer labor contracts for all workers.”
