Despite global progress in reducing #childmarriage (CM), many regions, including several countries in Africa, continue to experience alarmingly high rates. Our recent review of peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2023 sheds light on the factors contributing to this persistence and offers a path towards progress. Key findings include: 🔎 Gender Norms: Deep-rooted, unequal #gendernorms remain a significant barrier. 🔎 Economic Challenges: Widespread poverty and limited schooling and economic prospects for girls play a crucial role. 🔎 Legal Awareness: Weak awareness and enforcement of CM laws exacerbate the issue. 🔎 Cultural Factors: Opposition to women's and girls' sexual and reproductive health and rights (#SRHR), weak birth registration systems, and early puberty contribute to ongoing CM rates. 🔎 Generational Impact: A high proportion of women who married young in previous generations continues to influence current practices. 🔎 Evolving Dynamics: Improved girls' agency and autonomy and a growing number of available and accessible masculinity resources Our review underscores the need for more targeted research, policies, and programs to address these complex factors and accelerate progress in ending child marriage. CNN As Equals published new research in their series "Systems Error," which looks at how gender shapes our online experiences. In partnership with Plan International, the team surveyed more than 600 young women and girls across nine countries worldwide. The findings are concerning: 75% have encountered harmful content online, with more than 10% experiencing it daily or almost daily. Additionally, nearly half reported seeing or receiving unwanted sexual images. As a result, young women and girls have felt sad, depressed, stressed and anxious. In the #globalhealth sector, women make up 75% of the workforce but hold only 25% of leadership positions. To address this disparity and chart a path towards greater equity, we partnered with Global Health 50/50 and the African Population and Health Research Center to publish a new collection in the British Journal of Medicine (The BMJ).
