Today, the ICTJ celebrates United Nations Day, marking the 79th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter. The Charter reminds us of the importance of human rights, the respect of national sovereignty, and multilateralism to lasting peace. At a time when conflict rages in many parts of the world and violations of international human rights and humanitarian law are far too commonplace, it is more important than ever to remember the values that unite us.

#ExpertsChoice | Two and a half years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, victims continue to demand justice for the massive violations of human rights they have suffered, which have left many of them gravely harmed and psychologically traumatized. Despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent call at the UN General Assembly to hold perpetrators of war crimes accountable, significant barriers remain for victims trying to access justice. In ICTJ’s latest Expert’s Choice, Program Writer and Program Department Coordinator Alec Knight offers insightful recommendations on how to ensure Ukrainian victims can meaningfully participate in legal processes—even when courts are far from the conflict zone. https://lnkd.in/eH9rmVaJ How can we make justice more accessible to those affected? On September 30, the International Center for Transitional Justice, in collaboration with the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (Ministère des Affaires étrangères français), organized a conference to discuss the scope of #reparations before international criminal tribunals and ways to strengthen access to justice for victims of mass atrocities. This event led to insightful conversations. Notably, ICTJ Deputy Executive Director and Director of Programs Anna Myriam Roccatello affirmed that "As the relationship between criminal justice and transitional justice continues to evolve, it is important to emphasize reparation measures that help ensure non-recurrence, combat amnesia, and anchor reforms that satisfy victims and society." Later, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace in Colombia’s Jjudge Catalina Diaz-Gomez of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace in #Colombia highlighted the importance of victim's participation in judicial proceedings: “The very act of participating in judicial proceedings can be reparative. The judicial decision is itself reparative; truth is itself reparative. The judicial procedure is a restorative dialogue and in order to make that dialogue possible, we need to provide information and psychosocial support to victims.” We congratulate our partner on the success of the event and thank all attendees for their participation! One year after the October 7 attacks, war continues to rage between Israel and Hamas in the #Gaza strip. It is more important than ever to release the hostages, to unite for an immediate ceasefire in the region, and guarantee unimpeded access to humanitarian assistance to all those in need. These are the first essential actions to advance toward a durable peace centered on human dignity — once and for all.

#LAUNCH | A truth commission’s final report is the ultimate deliverable of years of dedicated work. However, most if not all big truth-seeking inquiries underestimate the effort and time needed to collect, organize, and analyze the daunting amount of data and transform them into such a document. Today, ICTJ is releasing “Reports That Transform: Reporting Truth and Making Impact,” a manual for team managers, investigators, researchers, and report writers working on large inquiries. It draws on real-life experiences from multiple truth commissions with extracts and examples from operational documents to offer practical guidance. 📒 Available for download now! https://lnkd.in/eKk3VEbE 🖋 : Howard Varney
