How desalination can assist to alleviate global water stress.

Navigating the challenge of water scarcity in geographically complex regions requires innovative solutions. Desalination and water reuse are emerging as vital tools in this quest. Access to fresh water can be a significant hurdle in remote and arid areas. However, desalination plants are providing critical water supplies to regions where traditional sources are scarce. Desalination technology, which turns seawater into potable water, has been a game-changer in places like the Middle East and North Africa. For example, the UAE’s large-scale desalination plants supply around 14% of the world's desalinated water, showcasing how this technology can turn the tide in water-scarce environments. Additionally, water reuse systems are making a substantial impact. By treating and recycling wastewater, these systems can provide a sustainable and reliable water supply. In Singapore, the NEWater program recycles up to 40% of the city's used water, demonstrating how reuse can meet demands in densely populated and water-stressed areas. With desalination and water reuse, communities in challenging geographical locations can achieve greater water security and sustainability. Today, IDRA plays a crucial role in advancing these solutions. But what if we could power these vital plants with clean, renewable energy? Recent advancements are making this possible. For instance, the Al Taweelah plant in Abu Dhabi is leading the charge. This state-of-the-art facility utilizes a combination of solar and wind energy to power its desalination processes, drastically reducing its carbon footprint. In fact, the plant's hybrid renewable energy system supports its production of 900,000 cubic meters of water per day—enough to supply 500,000 people—while slashing its CO2 emissions by approximately 50%. This integration of renewable energy not only addresses the growing need for clean water but also supports global climate goals. By embracing such innovations, we can ensure a sustainable supply of freshwater while protecting our planet for future generations. Ocean-based solutions could be our greatest ally in the fight against climate change. Research shows that these solutions can deliver up to 35% of the annual greenhouse gas emission cuts needed by 2050 to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C (2.7°F). That's a substantial impact from our vast and powerful oceans! Oceans have the potential to absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide through blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. These natural carbon sinks can store up to ten times more carbon per hectare than terrestrial forests, making them vital in our climate strategy . Restoring and protecting these coastal habitats not only sequesters carbon but also provides numerous co-benefits, such as improved water quality, biodiversity conservation, and coastal protection from storms and erosion. Innovations in marine renewable energy, such as offshore wind farms and wave energy, also play a crucial role. Global investments in offshore wind alone are expected to make it the most important ocean-climate mitigation solution by 2030. As we move towards a more sustainable future, it's essential to invest in these ocean-based solutions. The IDRA 2024-26 Term 21 Board of Directors nomination period is open! To qualify, candidates must have been active IDRA members since July 1, 2023. The IDRA Board is a working board with several standing and special committees. Candidates should have strong industry knowledge, an understanding of IDRA’s mission, Constitution, and Bylaws, and be available to dedicate considerable time to their duties if elected. Deadline to nominate: September 24, 2024 The Membership and Elections Committee asks that each candidate to provide: • A high-resolution photo • Short biography (max 150 words) • Brief description of what they intend to contribute to the Association We invite our members and community to participate in this process and nominate individuals dedicated to advancing the desalination and water reuse field. Directors are expected to attend two board meetings annually, actively participate in IDRA’s programs, events, and committees, and undertake special assignments.
