Exploring the past through the pages of historical fiction & nonfiction isn't just about learning history—it's about discovering ourselves, our roots, and our communities. Authors Leah Pileggi, Michael Leali, Sharon Flake, Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, and Alexandra Diaz brought life into history for young readers at the recently concluded Greater Pittsburgh Festival of Books.   

On my way from Brussels to Oslo for the "Words Matter! - Tackling the Impact of Hate Speech" conference, organized by The Oslo Center. Excited to present our research at The International Interfaith Research Lab on growing Educational Displacement -- the adverse impact of cultural violence in our classrooms -- and how we can prevent it. It's been inspiring to engage with people across different geographies and recognize that we all share the common goal of peace, recognition, and respect. "At the end of Three Summers, I share the story of what happened to each of the main characters, including my cousins. Was our sisterhood sustained by love or broken by hate? You will have to read the story to find out. But what I will share is this — during the Bosnian Genocide, these three summers I spent with my sisters, particularly with Zana, sustained my hope that humanity still exists. And every day at 5:55pm, even if bombs were falling, I thought of my sisters, our love of laughter, life, and one another. I vowed that if I survived the horrors of war and genocide, I would ensure that we see each other again one day. But unlike me, many children don’t get to survive and never get to live their dreams or experience their first summer crushes. Three Summers is therefore a warning, a lesson, and an act of love and solidarity with all children who feel disempowered, erased, and voiceless. By telling the stories that humanize the dehumanized I hope to inspire resilience to hate in all of us. Today was an absolute joy—I got to sign the very first copies of my latest book, #ThreeSummers, at Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington DC. #ThreeSummers is now at the top spot in the United States for kids' bestsellers at Barnes and Noble. Crafting stories and getting them into the hands of readers is a team effort, and as this week wraps up, I just want to say a big thank you to everyone involved. Thank you to the amazing individuals who hosted me today in Washington DC, from staff at Politics and Prose Bookstore to a team from An Open Book Foundation and my publisher Macmillan. In particular, I am grateful to educators and students who have opened their hearts to both receive my story and share their own stories with grace, warmth, and care.
