About us

The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and help people to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees and displaced people forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 50+ countries and in 28 U.S. cities, the IRC restores safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure.

  • Civilians should never be targets. Ever. Of the 1,640 people killed by the escalating conflict in Lebanon, 104 are children. 8,400 people are injured and 211,000 are displaced. And while the IRC is preparing an emergency response, ongoing insecurity may hinder our ability to deliver aid. In a region already devastated by conflict, displacement, and poverty the last thing civilians need is more war. We urge all parties to find a diplomatic solution and avoid further human suffering.

  • We are deeply concerned by the escalating conflict in Lebanon, which has left nearly 600 people killed, including 94 women and 50 children, and over 1,800 injured, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. IRC staff members and partner organizations have already been directly impacted by the attacks, which have forced families to flee their homes. The IRC urges all parties to urgently seek a diplomatic solution and avoid a regional conflagration and more humanitarian suffering. International law must be upheld to protect civilians and aid workers. More in our statement: https://lnkd.in/eMHGsSmb

  • "To continue my professional life in dentistry, it’s like fresh air.” When Yuliia Grashova and her husband left Ukraine with their five-year-old and newborn baby, she didn’t know if she’d ever continue her dentistry career again. As the family resettled in San Diego, California, they were connected with the IRC’s Workforce Integration for Newcomers (WIN) project, supported by the American Express Foundation, which has helped Yuliia get back into her profession and feel like herself again. Watch her story:

  • We cannot forget the dire crisis people from Sudan are facing. IRC doctor Albachir, working in Farchana refugee camp in Chad, reports on the situation for thousands of displaced families. “Since the start of the conflict, over 620,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived here in eastern Chad,” he explains. “They arrive exhausted and in poor health after fleeing a conflict zone or spending several months in spontaneous refugee sites near the border.” The IRC has been scaling up its services to provide critical healthcare, nutrition, and sexual and reproductive health services.

  • Many complex global problems don’t have a simple solution, but this one does. Acute malnutrition is simple to treat, yet 4 in 5 malnourished children still go untreated. Up to 2 million of them will die each year. The IRC is leading innovation on simplified approaches to treating malnutrition, ensuring more children can receive life-saving treatment with the same resources. But while the treatment is simple, more long-term solutions are needed. From climate change to food price inflation, swipe to read more about the complex causes of acute malnutrition around the world and what can be done to help ➡️

  • Niger entered the Emergency Watchlist Top 10 after a coup in July 2023 led to significant instability and worsened the country’s humanitarian crisis. International financial aid cuts have hampered the new government's ability to provide public services, further exacerbating the situation. Now, the country is facing record-breaking floods that have displaced over 400,000 people and killed hundreds. Waterborne diseases are spreading at an alarming rate and the ministry of health has recently declared a cholera outbreak. Swipe to learn more.
