Though there have been many technological advancements in the wine industry, it is still very common to harvest the grapes by hand. Mechanical harvesting requires the trellises to be set up with the machinery in mind, and as the vines can produce for up to 25 years, its not an easy or practical task to switch a vineyard’s entire operation to mechanical. The tools used by harvesters have remained consistent with the vessel the grapes being placed in changing the most. Currently the most common practice is boxes, but in the late 19th and early 20th century galvanized hods were very popular in French vineyards. The hods had straps, making it easy to carry on the harvester’s back, and the metal was much more durable than the previous woven basket hods. Now these antique hods are a very popular home décor item. #zinc #wine #vineyard #harvest #internationalzincassociation

Zinc coatings - whether galvanized, paint, or thermal spray - are winning the war against corrosion, and IZA's Kevin Irving delivered that message to participants at the AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance Western Conference in San Diego. Kevin's presentation and accompanying booth demonstrated how effectively zinc protects steel from the elements and lengthens service life. #zinc #steel #ZincForTheFuture

Happy #NationalFoodFortificationDay - a great time to ensure you are getting the micronutrients you need. The essential element zinc boosts our immune system, heals wounds and infections, supports skin health, and enables children to develop mentally and physically to reach their full potential. In developing countries, zinc deficiency poses a significant threat, and that's why the global zinc industry funds zinc supplementation around the world: https://lnkd.in/gXsZ29H #zinc #ZincForTheFuture #nutrition #ZincSavesKids #health

Galvanized steel is the way to go in car manufacturing, according to research from IZA and IIT Bombay, which finds as high as 65% of non-galvanized vehicles corrode within five years, compared to 7% of galvanized vehicles. While 90% of cars manufactured in North America, Europe, and Japan contain zinc-coated bodies, only between 20 and 25% of vehicles manufactured in India do, though that number is trending upward. The iconic image of the rows and rows of vines heavy with clusters of grapes is supported by zinc in another way than just soil concentration. Galvanized wire is the superior option when it comes to building the trellises on which the vines grow, not only does it have the strength to support the ever-increasing weight of the grapes, it also reduces wire chafing on newer vines. The anti-corrosion properties of the wire allow the trellis to last significantly longer in the elements, helping to limit labor and material costs. #zinc #wine #vineyard #internationalzincassociation
