Should rTMS be considered a first-line treatment for major depressive episodes in adults? This question is discussed in a recent opinion paper by Sean James O'Sullivan, Derrick Matthew Buchanan, PhD, Jean-Marie Batail, & Nolan Williams, published in Clinical Neurophysiology (2024). Compared to other first-line treatments of major depressive episodes, including psychotherapy and SSRIs, rTMS is suggested to have similar efficacy, fewer side-effects, lower risk of serious adverse events, comparable compliance, the potential for more rapid relief, and cost-effectiveness.
