What’s it like to see an Intuitive site grow from 230 to 4,000 employees in a decade? We asked Carlos Aguirre, VP of Manufacturing Operations for North America, who’s had a front row seat to this transformation—and who saw its potential as soon as he joined. “We had an opportunity to match the talent in Mexicali with the vision of the business—to grow into a true manufacturing company. I knew it was possible.” The 4,000th employee will certainly experience a different company. The site has expanded from one building to a whole manufacturing campus where employees build 95% of the accessories and instruments distributed worldwide. But the spirit and culture of the site have remained the same. “We have always been fully committed to our mission,” Carlos says. “Every decision is made with the customer in mind. And we want everyone to be comfortable and happy here; we don’t have time for politics. We just want to support our people.” Of course, growing successfully also means being nimble and adaptive. As Carlos explains: “It’s dynamic, we’re evolving, and our teams are telling us what they need to be most effective. We’re listening.” Carlos is most proud of the way his team has met every challenge asked of them on this journey. “The main reason behind our growth is the team here. And this year, we’re excited to be here to unveil our latest innovations to the Ion robotic bronchoscopy system: three groundbreaking updates that further enhance the system’s navigational accuracy while laying the foundation for planning beyond biopsy in the future. Updates to the Ion system and PlanPoint software include advanced planning and navigation features that enhance visibility to critical anatomical structures, such as vasculature, and allow physicians to mark precise areas of interest within or around a target nodule. Ion’s enhanced cone-beam CT integration now interfaces directly with both Siemens Healthineers’ Cios Spin and GE Healthcare’s OEC 3D, furthering the ability to correct for CT-to-body divergence and improve workflow efficiency. And My Intuitive now enables Ion physicians to track case information and use their performance data to generate insights that help improve their practices. Having this new innovative technology available for our patients to access is game changing,” said Dr. Haval Balata, Respiratory Physician and Clinical Lead for the newly introduced Ion robotic bronchoscopy service at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Where has your curiosity led you? Da Vinci senior clinical senior representative Meika Miller, MBA was “always the inquisitive type,” she says. “In the interview process, when I recognized that one of the characteristics Intuitive sought was curiosity, I knew this was the place for me.” Meika joined Intuitive in 2021 and has been growing her Sales career ever since. She credits the support of her team and a patients-first mindset with her success and personal fulfillment she’s found here. Outside of work, Meika spends time with her husband and four children, and she looks forward to continuing her journey at Intuitive, always following this advice from her grandmother: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.” Because, as Meika explains, “If you’re always in the comfortable place, you’re not growing, you’re not stretching. When I joined Intuitive, my shoulders grew broader. Because it is a responsibility that I don’t take lightly.
