When was the last time you evaluated your surgical inventory? When was the last time Physician Preference cards were updated? Often The Sterile Processing Department is so busy, updating files is low in priority. Surgeons change requirements and often the new instruments are added but the old instruments are still on the preference card. That sometimes means that unnecessary instruments are placed on a surgical tray and not used, costing time and money. Why not make it a priority to check the next time a surgeon is on the schedule? What do you do after a surgeon disassociates with the hospital? Often, surgeons have instruments and/or surgical supply requirements unique to them so the hospital dutifully supplies what is requested. When they are no longer associated with the hospital, what happens to these instruments? Staff often just leave everything because they don’t want to discard perfectly good medical inventory. A valid point. Why not give them a chance at a new life? First: · Make sure they are no longer going to be ordered · Remove the PPC from all files. · Remove the inventory from the stockroom. · Contact Inventory Solutions Plus for free removal. There is no question that Sterile Processing plays an important role in the hospital to ensure patient safety and prevention of infection.
