A Solution to the Anesthesia Crisis in Ophthalmology According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the number of anesthesia providers is expected to drop 30% in the next 10 years. This will have a major impact the ability of some ASCs to perform surgery. It’s more important than ever that surgeons control their surgical decisions. Office-based surgery (OBS) suites utilize oral or IV sedation. The difference with OBS is that the surgeon determines the appropriate level of anesthesia for each patient. 99% of OBS cases are performed with oral sedation which does not require a licensed anesthesia provider.
