Today, Iowa Afterschool Alliance is proud to celebrate with communities across Iowa, joining over 8,000 events nationwide to remind everyone to keep the #LightsOnAfterschool. Afterschool programs are vital for helping our youth thrive academically and socially. Every child deserves a safe space after school—a space to explore, grow, and connect. Let’s continue supporting these important spaces, ensuring all young people have the opportunities they deserve. Happy #LightsOnAfterschool! Don't have a chance to participate in a LOA event today? This year marks 25 years of Lights On Afterschool! #LightsOnAfterschool
Lights On Afterschool is the ultimate celebration for out-of-school time (OST) programs, and this year marks its 25th anniversary! Here are three simple ways to make the most of this celebration: Engage Your Supporting Cast – Give youth a voice and invite local officials to hear directly from students about the value of your program. Activities like decorating light bulbs with personal stories can help students share their perspectives creatively with decision-makers. Roll Out the Red Carpet for Health & Wellness – Highlight how your OST program supports students’ mental and physical well-being. Show off activities that promote healthy habits, such as games, nutrition education, and exercise. Keep the Spotlight On – Make Lights On Afterschool more than just a one-time event! Partner with others, spread the word, and end your event with a call to action that keeps your program in the spotlight year-round. Ready to shine a light on your OST program? IAA, supported in part by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, is in our nation’s capital this week convening with the 50 State Afterschool Network! A huge thank you to our Strategic Leadership Team members Ryan Page, and Kamryn Ryan for joining Heidi and Adriana at this incredible event - Catalyzing for Thriving Youth. We’re soaking it all in and our own Ryan Page participated in a panel discussion on Strengthening Data Systems for Equitable Child Care Solutions. From youth mental health to workforce, policy and research updates, and everything in between—we are grateful for the opportunity and energized to bring new momentum back to our great state.
