MID-SERIES CHECK-IN: HOW TO WIN YOUR FIRST IRONMAN PRO SERIES We are currently at the halfway point of the inaugural IRONMAN Pro Series, with IRONMAN Vitoria coming up this weekend on July 14. We take this chance to look at how our top athletes are performing and see if any interesting observations can be made. Read the Full Analysis Here: https://lnkd.in/gm9sewAh Number of Races Looking at the top ten athletes for each gender, we see that the men have completed 31 races in total, which is comparable to 30 races for the top ten women. Therefore, each triathlete has completed on average three races out of a possible nine (ten for the women). This shows that athletes are being selective about their races, though it also makes sense to have done three at the halfway point of the series – only the top five scores are counted, so athletes might want to race slightly more than the minimum so they can drop the lowest score(s) in case of a bad race day. IRONMAN vs IRONMAN 70.3 Race Selection As a refresher, in the IRONMAN Pro series, first place earns 5,000 points, with subsequent positions earning progressively fewer points based on finishing time (one point less per second after the first finisher). In IRONMAN 70.3 races, the first place earns 2,500 points. The breakdown of races differs greatly between the top ten men and the top ten women. The top women have completed, on average, 1.4 IRONMAN races whereas the men have only done 0.9. Naturally, completing zero point something of a race doesn’t make practical sense at an individual level, but on aggregate it gives a sense of the different strategies between men and women. Every Second Matters As we cross the equator of the IRONMAN Pro Series, this is still anyone’s game. Athletes have seen how the scoring system of the series values participation and consistency, meaning that to score high, they must show up and fight till the last second, regardless of the ranking they get for that race.
