Topic of the Week: By undervaluing alternatives to #wind and #solar power, #batteries, and #electrolyzers, the costs imposed on energy transition are at risk of making it unworkable. We see the pullback on targets growing, and part of the reason is that there are too few options to get the necessary incentive attention. Overcomplicating pathways to lower emissions will make the entire energy transition more expensive and less likely to work. Weekly #Sustainability & #EnergyTransition Report 179: Will A Lack of Imagination Maintain Constraints on Affordable Transition? | https://hubs.li/Q02wNPfb0 🔍 Other items in this report: We look at a #PET recycle breakthrough from Origin Materials and discuss the risk that lower carbon prices in Europe today will result in much higher prices later – are those suggesting the pulling forward of credit sales just looking for election votes? We also examine the arguments around the #45V credit and point out that it is all about power, not hydrogen. Jim. Could not agree more with this analysis both the capacity factor need and the challenges in regulated states. As we chart the right path for IGP, the most significant resource is the lower Mississippi but the challenges of dealing with the regulated utilities is pushing some of our focus elsewhere. One of the additional challenges of AI and data centers is that they need the power soon and this should also push their focus towards unregulated states.
Nuking the AI Data Centers Electric power demand forecasts are soaring due to AI data centers. The North American Electric Reliability Council raised its 9yr forward U.S. demand growth forecast by 155%. The sheer amount of new generation required to meet this demand presents a historic challenge to the electric power industry. Why? Because all incremental planned capacity additions over the next 5 years are intermittent wind and solar while the incremental demand is coming from data centers that need power 24/7/365. Moreover, the primary users of these data centers, Big Tech, have net-zero carbon commitments. Wind+solar+batteries is a partial solution but only at low penetration rates. A Clean Air Task Force study showed that at over 80% penetration, costs would exceed $1.00 per kilowatt hour (KwH). The current wholesale price is 5 cents. Big Tech’s Solution? Go Nuclear. It’s zero-carbon and has ~90-95% up-time, the highest by far of any source of electricity. Well, that's exactly what Amazon has done by siting a data center next to Talen Energy’s Susquehanna nuclear facility and signing a long-term power supply contract for a likely significant premium to the current wholesale market. This deal doesn’t add capacity, it just re-allocates a reliable asset away from the grid to a customer willing to pay more for it and reduces reliability for everyone else. So build more nukes, right? The problem has been less a lack of public acceptance than cost. The most recently completed nuclear plant in Georgia in 2023 (only the 2nd in nearly 30 years) had big cost overruns and requires a price of about 21 cents per KwH to cover its operating & capital costs. Nonetheless, Big Tech is looking to develop their own nuclear power, perhaps with new technology. The last time industry began producing its own power on a large scale was the late 70s/early 80s. Cost overruns on –ironically– nuclear power plants built by utilities who passed along these costs made self-generated electricity on an industrial scale cheaper than grid purchases. This time around it is not price that is causing industrial customers to self-generate power, its performance. Big Tech is willing to pay more for reliable, zero-carbon power. If they can’t get it from the grid, they’ll procure it on their own. Regulated utilities can make investments that improve reliability and lower carbon emissions while providing more growth for their shareholders, but those shareholders are not willing to take on the risk of nuclear power to do it. Not so the tech giants. Maybe they can work together? If governors want to attract more tech and re-shoring dollars to their states, they may want to rethink the value proposition in their current regulatory regimes, put a value on reliability and allocate the cost to those most willing to pay. Market forces do affect legal monopolies but only through the regulatory framework. https://lnkd.in/dj9c7jHn
