Is Your Hotel’s Sustainability Certification Scheme Legit? Greenwashing has shifted from cleverly deceptive marketing spin around environmental practices and ambiguous claims on the benefits of services and products, to violating consumer protection laws and misleading investors. Then SDGwashing and climate-washing emerged with vague and false claims on sustainable development, climate action achievements and Net Zero pledges. http://surl.li/nvtrbo

EU Zero Tolerance for Greenwashing Combatting Misleading Green Claims by 20 airlines The EU Green Claims Directive adopted on January, 17th 2024 affects small, medium and large businesses in the EU and abroad that are targeting the EU consumer. It defines what kind of information companies have to provide to justify their environmental marketing claims in the future. It also creates a framework and deadlines for checking evidence and approving claims and specifies what happens to companies who break the law. https://shorturl.at/nASZ8

Breaching 1.5°C Threshold Across One Year Humans have caused major climate changes to happen and extreme weather is now a part of our lives. For the first time, average global air temperature across the entire year was 1.53°C hotter than before industrialisation, the world’s sea surface was at its highest ever recorded average temperature and the extent of sea ice in the Earth’s polar regions was the lowest on record, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). January 2023 to February 2024 was a year filled with more extreme droughts, searing heatwaves, intense rainfall, rising sea-levels, loss of wildlife and deadly disasters worldwide.

On 17th January 2024, the European Parliament gave the final approval to a new law that will ban misleading environmental claims on products, services and organisations, and improve labelling, making the European Union (EU) the toughest region of the world in its approach to greenwashing claims that deceive the public. “This law will change the everyday lives of all Europeans! We will step away from throwaway culture, make marketing more transparent and fight premature obsolescence of goods. People will be able to choose products that are more durable, repairable and sustainable thanks to reliable labels and advertisements”, explained S&D Group VP and EP negotiator Biljana Borzan. “In the EU, there are more than 1200 green labels and claims, but barely 35% have any form of verification. The jungle of false environmental claims will end.” EU member states now have two years to introduce the new rules into national law. https://lnkd.in/gEFnq76v #itmustbenow #earthcheck #climatepositive #climatepositiveprogram #carbonoffset #carbonpositive #sustainabletravel #travelandtourism #transformingtravel #sustainabletourism #sustainablehospitality #carbonemissions #climatecrisis #globalwarming

Raising the Bar to Climate Positive We should begin 2024 with a reality check. The 2024 Global Risk Report highlight a deteriorating global outlook with economic uncertainty and rapid technological changes in a world plagued by two dangerous crises: climate and conflict. In the fight against climate change, swift and urgent action is vital NOW. Advancing sustainability is about preserving, protecting, and regenerating the places we love the most. Funding climate action to achieve Climate Positive is about buying us more time to enhance the resilience of our planet and societies. To truly make a difference, rebuilding trust and resilience, systems change and inclusion, innovation and foresight, global governance and greater efforts at collective action for the long term must be where we take our stand. FIVE MAJOR ACTION AREAS The COP28 Summit was organised around four cross-cutting themes – Technology and Innovation, Inclusion, Frontline Communities and Finance; and successfully delivered on five major action areas. 1. The first global stocktake on climate action progress. COP28 reached its objective to assess international efforts to keep the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within reach. 2. Speeding the energy transition. The global climate deal called on countries to contribute to international efforts to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems “in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science”. It called for a tripling of global renewable energy capacity by 2030, including the development of “zero- and low-emission technologies – renewables, nuclear, abatement and removal technologies such as carbon capture utilisation and storage, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors, and low-carbon hydrogen production”. It called on nations to accelerate efforts “towards the phase-down of unabated coal power”, using the same language agreed at previous summits 3. Putting people at the heart of climate action. COP28 operationalised Loss and Damage started to fill the fund and mobilised over USD$83 bn in new financial commitments. The declarations on agriculture, food and health recognised that unprecedented adverse climate impacts are increasingly threatening the resilience of agriculture and food systems and the ability of many, especially the most vulnerable, to produce and access food in the face of mounting hunger, malnutrition, and economic stresses. It also recognised the profound potential of agriculture and food systems to drive powerful and innovative responses to climate change. https://lnkd.in/dPkJUH6B #cop28 #cop28uae #itmustbenow #actnow #globalimpact #transparency #climatechange #climateaction #agriculture #nuclearenergy #greenenergy #renewableenergy #renewables #coalpower #fossilefuels #globalwarming #opnion #forceforgood #sustainability #sustainabletravel
