"The hottest trend that has captivated the world as we write this book is the rise of ChatGPT and, more generically, the power of generative AI. While we’re still seeing the potential of AI unfold across nearly every industry and labor pool, in the context of this book, it is interesting to note that much of the wildfire spread and impact of ChatGPT can be, unsurprisingly, traced to API-centered factors. "The standards-based API interface of OpenAI has made the costs of coordination and integration with the capabilities of ChatGPT so low that almost every software producing company (except for the ones competing for AI supremacy) have already rolled out new features in their own offerings powered by OpenAI and other providers’ large language models (LLMs). "The companies who’ve moved the fastest to integrate generative AI capabilities have been able to do so in part because much of the consuming applications themselves were already unbundled into segmented modules that communicate through APIs." I wrote up my notes from an an outstanding New Statesman interview of Dr. Scott Keeter, who has been part of attempting to create accurate election polling since the 1980s. (His bio includes: "Senior survey advisor to @PewResearch Center. Lapsed political scientist." 😂) Among other things, he describes how important polling is for a working democracy, as a counterbalance to a system that inherently "favors the wealthy, the articulate, and the educated, who are amplified." He tells the amazing story of being at the "decision desk" of a newsroom in 1980 when President Carter was heavily favored to win the election — at the time, candidate Ronald Reagan was deemed to be too extreme (what a thought!). In those days, there was comparatively fewer information flows, so when they saw that Reagan was likely to win, for many hours, he was only one of a small group of people who knew with a high degree of certainty that Reagan was going to win the election. Then, like now, the job of the decision desk is to call when a presidential candidate — but only when they “can be reliably predicted to have won that state, or the entire election.” This is a tough job, with many competing pressures. (Later in the interview, he describes how 2016 rocked the entire polling industry, and led to numerous waves of corrections attempting to fix the sampling errors. He describes the numerous structural issues that have undermined accurate sampling, the evolution of polling techniques, and paints what the 2024 Election Day will feel like for all the major decision desks. More on that later.) Anyone interested in statistics, sampling, how polls increase the effectiveness of civic engagement, and how election coverage night actually works will likely love this interview. He starts off by answering this question: Why is polling so important, and why is it so bad when confidence in polling is undermined? Keeter: “When trust in polling is undermined, I believe something important for democracy is lost. The biases in the system that naturally favor the wealthy, the articulate, and the educated are [excessively] amplified if we don’t have high-quality polling to provide a balanced view.” You can read my notes here: https://lnkd.in/gkJtfgKe Or watch his fantastic interview here: https://lnkd.in/g9M3ZZUK
