West Center for Dementia Care, we understand the profound impact strokes can have on older adults and the importance of providing specialized care for those affected by both stroke and dementia. About us
The James L. West Alzheimer’s Center is a not-for-profit organization founded on the love and compassion of Eunice P. West, who witnessed the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease on her husband, Fort Worth business leader and philanthropist, James L. West. The West Center has been a pioneer from inception and is one of only a few comprehensive nonprofit Alzheimer's Centers of its kind nationwide. In addition to providing dignified and considerate care to those who live with Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias, the West Center also offers a variety of programs for those who care for loved ones living with the disease. The James L. West Alzheimer's Center is also home to a senior adult day program that offers day time relief to caregivers who work outside of the home or need time to rest or run errands. The program allows socialization in a safe environment, where participants are cared for while their loved ones are away. The concept that every phase of life is an opportunity to grow and learn new things, uniquely positions the West Center to serve as a community resource for research, education and training. Our affiliations with medical schools, nursing schools and even high schools have resulted in many medical professionals entering their fields with a healthy perspective on the complexities of caring for the aged.

We're proud to announce an impactful partnership with the Texas Assisted Living Association (TALA) to advance dementia education and training across Texas! Recognizing the growing needs in assisted living, James L. West Center for Dementia Care proactively developed a specialized curriculum two years ago for assisted living communities. This curriculum is now a key resource as new legislation mandates dementia education to ensure compassionate, knowledgeable care for residents as they age in place. Our in-house experts, Jaime Cobb Tinsley and Hollie Glover, both longstanding keynote speakers and educators at the TALA state conference, have been instrumental in shaping this curriculum and spearheading the training. Their dedication reflects our commitment to elevating care standards and empowering assisted living leaders to deliver the best possible support for those living with dementia. Stay tuned as we continue to share our expertise, strengthening communities and making a difference one program at a time! #morethanmemorycare #findingjoyindementia #jameslwest

Senior Day Program FAQs: What kinds of activities does your senior day program have? James L. West’s Day Program follows a daily path, alternating between cognitive and seated activities with movement and physical activity. Participants are encouraged, but never forced to participate. A typical day starts with a continental breakfast followed by a non-denominational devotion, a review of historical facts for that day, exercise, hydration, and group discussion. Lunch is served before afternoon activities begin. Music therapy is a popular activity offered twice a week. Snacks are served in mid-afternoon, followed by small group table games, puzzles and other activities. Special attention is paid to providing opportunities for participants to help each other and the staff with activities that provide a sense of purpose and usefulness. Emphasis is placed on helping participants maintain current abilities as long as possible, which can reduce depression, anxiety, and other behaviors that accompany dementia. Participants make their own decisions about participation throughout the day. #morethanmemorycare #findingjoyindementia #jameslwest #jlw

Senior Living FAQs: Where can I go get tested for Alzheimer’s or dementia? It takes a thorough diagnosis to determine if memory loss is caused by dementia or another condition. A complete and proper evaluation will obtain medical and family history, including psychiatric history and history of cognitive and behavioral changes. A physician will conduct cognitive tests, physical and neurologic exams, and will possibly request a brain scan like an MRI. They should also ask family members or a person close to the individual being tested to provide input. A diagnosis can come from a primary care physician, geriatrician, neurologist or neurophysiologist. Please know that no one should be told they have nothing to worry about based on a short screening with a handful of questions. If you need help in finding a doctor to conduct an evaluation, our staff can refer you to a professional assessment program.
