Our conservation science team members, Everlyne Lelei and Devin Jacobs, just got back from the Esri User Conference — an incredible opportunity to connect with their peers in the GIS space! 🗺️📊 For years, JGI and Esri have partnered to leverage cutting-edge Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. This collaboration helps us map critical areas, track ecosystem changes, and develop community-led conservation strategies that make a real impact. 🌿🐵 During the conference, Everlyne and Devin connected with fellow conservation organizations to discuss best practices and the use of GIS. In their discussions, they learned and explored the latest geospatial tools to enhance our conservation efforts at JGI. We are so thankful for the wonderful work of our peers, and we're excited to continue our partnership with Esri to further our wildlife protection work. Join us in celebrating this essential and innovative partnership and the incredible work we accomplish because of it! 🎉💚 #EsriUC #ConservationScience #TeamJGI #GIS #WildlifeProtection #PartnershipForThePlanet

🌍✨ Meet Mozambique the Gorilla, the Newest Member of JGI’s Tchimpounga Sanctuary 🦍✨ We’re thrilled to share the inspiring rescue story of an infant gorilla, found in and named for Mozambique, who was saved from the illegal wildlife trade through the swift coordination of various government agencies. The Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA) and law enforcement officials worked tirelessly to ensure her safety, confiscating and processing crucial permits for her transport from Mozambique through Angola to the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga sanctuary in the Republic of the Congo. 🇲🇿🇦🇴🇨🇬 👩⚕️ Dr. Rebeca Atencia, JGI Republic of the Congo’s Executive Director and Head Veterinarian of Tchimpounga, with support from the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance, teamed up with MWA’s Dr. Isabel Almeida to stabilize Mozambique (also nicknamed “ZZ”) and prepare her for her new home. ❤️ Antoinette, a long-time caregiver at Tchimpounga, graciously came out of retirement to be ZZ’s human “mother.” With her expert care, ZZ’s quarantine period has progressed beautifully. She is now stable, eating well, and showing great signs of energy and a light-hearted personality. 🌱 Infant gorillas need incredibly sensitive care, especially in their early years. ZZ will be under the expert care of Tchimpounga staff for the next two years before she joins other gorillas at another facility. This specialized care ensures she grows up healthy and strong. --- We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance, the Government of Mozambique (National Administration of Conservation Areas), the Government of the Republic of the Congo (Ministry of Forest Economy), the Government of Angola (Ministry of Environment, CITES Authority, & National Institute for Biodiversity Conservation), TAAG-Linhas Aereas de Angola, Fundação Kissama, Fondation Brigitte Bardot, Ivan Carter Wildlife Alliance, Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), JGI Republic of the Congo & JGI USA. Together, we can inspire hope through action! 💚 Photos by Fernando Turmo, Rebeca Atencia, and Heather Anne Vanek. Dr. Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute do not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. This represents a sanctuary context with trained professionals. #RescueMozambique #WildlifeRescue #JaneGoodallInstitute #Tchimpounga #HopeThroughAction #Conservation #EndWildlifeTrade #GorillaRescue #AnimalConservation #GorillaLove #SaveTheGorillas

Meet Alice Macharia, our incredible Vice President of Africa Programs at the Jane Goodall Institute! 🌍✨ Alice leads our community-led conservation strategies, balancing community needs with environmental stewardship and protection for chimpanzee populations. Alice's journey with JGI began as an intern, and she returned as a project coordinator after completing her education. Her impressive, long career at JGI has since grown exponentially. Highlights include securing a $19.9 million government grant and expanding the Tacare program, which is JGI's signature community-led conservation approach, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Alice now lives in the desert and, in her free time, loves reading and traveling. 📚✈️ 📷 Photo 1: Courtesy of JGI Uganda Photo 2: Courtesy of JGI Canada Photo 3: Brenda Mirembe Photo 4: Courtesy of BBVA Foundation (https://lnkd.in/efipBCFw) #WomenInConservation #JaneGoodallInstitute #TacareApproach #CommunityLed #Conservation #ExpertFeature

  • 🌱 At the Jane Goodall Institute, we believe in the power of young people — one of Jane's greatest reasons for hope — which is why so many of our programs focus on helping young people create the change needed for a kinder world. In addition to Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots , our global youth action program, JGI also supports education support programs, especially for young women! Pictured here are a few of our scholarship recipients, and here's a look at a few of our programs: 📓 JGI Tanzania's Roots & Shoots Zanzibar Scholarship Project — funded by the SeaDream Family Foundation — supports high school students in Zanzibar as they pursue higher education at universities around Tanzania. 📚 JGI Tanzania's Girls Scholarship program — funded by the Wanda Bobowski Fund — focuses on two western regions of Tanzania: Kitavia and Kigoma. In addition to scholarships funding higher education, program staff foster a positive perception of girls' education in local communities to encourage women to pursue greater opportunities. 🌸 JGI Uganda's Girls Empowerment Project — funded by the Dr. Scholl Foundation — provides reproductive education and menstrual care to keep young women in school. JGI works with Ugandan villages to organize peer education and provide reusable sanitary pads so girls don't have to miss any days. • 🌍🐵 Happy World Chimpanzee Day! 🌳🔍 On July 14, 64 years ago, a young Jane Goodall first stepped into Gombe, Tanzania, beginning her groundbreaking research into wild chimpanzee behavior that has forever changed how we view both chimpanzees and ourselves. 🥳👏 In honor of this anniversary, the Jane Goodall Institute joined forces with NGOs like North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance, Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection , and Lincoln Park Zoo to establish #WorldChimpanzeeDay. We're now celebrating our sixth annual party for chimpanzees! 🎉 Now, it's your turn to join us! This #WorldChimpanzeeDay, help us spread the message about these wonderful creatures and the ongoing efforts for their benefit, including the countless professionals and partners working tirelessly to protect, rehabilitate, and conserve this amazing species. We are so proud to support them and to uphold Jane's vision of creating a planet where all species can thrive! 🐵✨ #WorldChimpanzeeDay #JaneGoodall #JaneGoodallInstitute #ChimpanzeeConservation #HootHootHurray #PantHootChallenge #Chimpanzees #Apes #Primates

  • #DidYouKnow that chimpanzees have complex social dynamics? Anyone who's read Jane's observations of Gombe's chimpanzees could be in no doubt! Here are some characteristics of chimpanzee society: 🌳 Fission-fusion society: chimpanzee troops separate and come together as they need for different seasons and times of day. 👑 Patriarchs AND matriarchs: while males often display more obvious signals of dominance, females have their own hierarchy with dominant females who help the dominant males lead. 💚 Parent-child bonds: these tight bonds of care can form not only between birth mothers and children, but between adoptive parents and children as well! 🐵 Female independence: when they go through adolescence, female chimpanzees often leave their troop in search of another. Males tend to stay in their birth troop where their mother's standing can benefit them. And these are just a few of the fascinating insights we've gained into chimpanzee behavior! We learn a lot about their social dynamics from watching the chimpanzees at JGI's Tchimpounga Sanctuary, which you can support by becoming a Chimp Guardian today! >> https://lnkd.in/e9MVSYnD P.S. ➡️ One of Dr. Jane Goodall’s (many) contributions to the scientific community is her advocacy for the sentience and sapience of non-human animals — a concept that changed the way we study species today 🔍🔬🫶 So it felt fitting to speak with Sentient Media about Jane’s signature approach to ethology, her transformation into a noted conservationist, and her persistent ✨hope✨ for our planet... and how that informs the work we do at The Jane Goodall Institute to inspire hope and transform it into action! 💪 “When Jane talks about hope, it is not some fluffy puppies and daffodils — which we love — but it is a choice, a hard-fought decision; an active choice everyday.” ✨ Read the Article Here ➡️➡️ https://lnkd.in/eFj5KRY5 Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania Jane Goodall Institute Uganda Julieta Cardenas

  • 🐵 In honor of #WorldChimpanzeeDay on July 14, we're sharing some of the top chimpanzee behaviors that Jane observed in Gombe, Tanzania! #DidYouKnow that chimpanzees are omnivores? When Dr. Jane Goodall observed a chimpanzee eating meat in 1960, it was a major shift from the belief that chimpanzees only ate plants. And we don't just mean termites — chimpanzees have been known to hunt smaller animals like bushpigs and small monkeys. We now know meat only comprises a very small fraction of a chimpanzee's diet, perhaps only 3%. They mostly eat plants, fruits, and nuts! 🌱🍌🥜 🥭🍇🍉 Help us feed the chimpanzees of JGI's Tchimpounga Sanctuary lots of tasty fruits by becoming a Chimp Guardian today >> https://lnkd.in/e9MVSYnD 📸 credit: Stephano Lihedule

🐵🗓️ Can you believe World Chimpanzee Day is just two weeks away?? 🌳🔍 Each year on July 14, we celebrate our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom! Why July 14? Because on that day 64 years ago, Jane first stepped into what is now known as Gombe, Tanzania, to begin her research into wild chimpanzee behavior. She had no way of knowing that her insights into chimpanzees would not only change how we view them, but also how we view ourselves. 🥳👏 In honor of this anniversary, the Jane Goodall Institute came together with a group of NGOs, including North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance, Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection, and Lincoln Park Zoo, to found #WorldChimpanzeeDay. And we'll be celebrating our sixth annual party for chimps all month long! Join us by sharing your favorite chimpanzee fact in the comments below to help us kick off the celebration.
