  • Today Janine is choosing to acknowledge and celebrate Brotherhood/Sisterhood Week! It is celebrated annually during the third week in February and as part of this, she'd like to share its importance to Janine and her family. Brotherhood and sisterhood can take many forms. For her family, even though Janine's children are siblings by marriage, they all consider themselves true brothers and sisters instead of using "step" as part of the description. Whether you’re born with different parents or the same parents as Janine and her sister, let’s take the time to celebrate the brothers and sisters we have been blessed with and tell them how much they mean to us. • Welcome to the continuation of the “Let’s Get Organized” series. Today is the 2nd bookkeeping tip which focuses on the importance of separating business and personal finances. We hope you find this helpful! Mixing business with your personal finances is a quick and easy way to mess up your business’s finances. The first step to take when you open a business is to open a business checking account. If you are a sole proprietor, Janine recommends using the same bank you use for your personal banking for the ease of paying yourself. Be sure to run all income and expenditures through this business bank account. If your business collects sales tax, be sure to have a separate sales tax checking account to transfer sales tax from your business account to your sales tax account. This ensures money is set aside to pay your sales tax when sales tax returns come due. New York State is starting to clamp down on businesses who are not paying their sales tax via a designated sales tax checking account. If you do not have a designated sales tax checking account, get one. Bottom line, keep your personal and business accounts separate for more concise and pain-free record keeping. Would you like assistance with completing your weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly payroll? Look no further! Janine Anderson’s Accounting Solutions can assist you with all your payroll needs. • Given the accounting services Janine offers, she works with a lot of different businesses, but the interesting thing is they can be clustered into a few different sectors. Over the coming months, as part of the Celebrating Clients: Our Shining Stars series, we will sprinkle in some posts of the different sectors she works with and a little bit about each business or organization within that sector. The first sector to be featured is churches. Janine is proud to say that she works with the following organizations: • Conduit Ministries which is a nondenominational church in Jamestown, NY whose mission is to LIVE like Jesus. LOVE like Jesus. SERVE like Jesus. • The Rock Church is a growing non-denominational church in Lakewood, NY whose mission is to help all people Know God, Find Freedom, Discover Purpose, and Make a Difference in their world. • Zion Lutheran Church, located in Frewsburg NY, is a gathering place of God's people dedicated to learning, sharing, and spreading the love and word of God. If you are looking for a place to worship that is more than a church, we encourage you to find out more about all three of these organizations to see if one is a good fit for you. You won’t be disappointed! #janineandersonsaccountingsolutions #BusinessSector #church

  • If you’re like a lot of people who have worked for an employer for a while, it’s easy to forget that you can update your tax withholdings at any time. Today’s payroll tip guides you on how and when to best do this. Employers are obligated to withhold taxes on behalf of their employees, but they rarely can advise them how much to withhold from each paycheck. Deciding on how much to withhold is often very confusing for employees and more than not, employees who have been with a company for an extended period never adjust their withholding by completing new withholding forms. Employees can update their withholding forms any time throughout the year. They simply ask their employer to update their withholdings. Now to decide whether to update your withholding. If your prior year income tax return had you owing the government, you are definitely going to want to adjust your withholdings, especially if your income is going to increase or remain the same. Remember, the more allowances you claim, the less amount will be withheld from your paycheck. If you’re looking to generate a larger refund or owed on the prior year tax return, you want 0 allowances and may need to add an additional amount to the “extra withholding” line. Please note increasing your income tax withholding causes a reduction in the net amount of your paycheck. Ideally you want your annual withholding and your tax liability for the year to be close. I recommend double checking withholdings on your pay stubs at the start of each year and mid-year. If you’ve had a major life change like buying a home, getting married, or having a child, be sure to check your withholdings to be sure you’re still on track. When in doubt, the IRS has a tax withholding estimator you can use, or you can always reach out to your tax preparer. • January is often the time of new beginnings and we're excited to premiere a new segment of posts as part of the Celebrating Clients: Our Shining Stars series. Janine regularly shares information about her clients’ businesses and thought it would be fun to feature a storytelling segment titled “Janine’s Story” which talks about the relationship and history she has with her clients, as well as the specific services provided. Today we're featuring our first Janine’s Story which highlights 5th Street Sunoco. Janine has had the pleasure of knowing Dan Nocero and his sons, JR and Robert who also work at 5th Street Sunoco, for over 13 years. She considers them not only clients, but friends. She met them through another firm she worked for, and they immediately hit it off. They love to joke around and so does Janine. She would always set aside mini-Snickers bars for Dan from the candy dish as he would come in weekly digging through the candies and ask where all the Snickers were. She would then reach into her desk drawer and surprise him with his favorite candy. This was the start of a great relationship with Dan. From the beginning, Dan encouraged Janine to start her own business and when she did, he was quick to say, "wherever you go, I will go”. He always has her business cards next to his register to hand out, and his support and loyalty mean a lot. Since 2016, Janine has provided the following services: sales tax, tire tax, and payroll. She thoroughly enjoys working with Dan and his family! Thank you, Nocero family, for putting your trust in Janine! We hope you’ve enjoyed this little behind the scenes look into Janine's story with 5th Street Sunoco. #janineandersonsaccountingsolutions #storytelling

  • Hello! Today’s Tuesday Tip of the Week is a business advising tip that focuses on knowing the difference between cash flow and profit. Many people believe cash flow and profit in a business mean the same thing. They most definitely are not the same. Cash flow is the money which flows in and out of the business from financial activities, investments, and other operations. Profit is the money that remains from sales revenue after the business expenses are subtracted. Even a profitable company can go broke. Here’s an example: suppose you bought an item for $100 and sold it for $200. In this situation, you made $100 profit. However, what if the buyer cannot pay you on time? In this case, your business will show the profit—but what about the bills you need to pay in the meantime? You may not have the cash despite the profit you just earned. If this happens repeatedly, a business could go bankrupt. Bottom line, keep track of things you are spending versus selling. In addition, be sure to review all your financial statements monthly to get a clear sense of your business situation. Looking for someone to assist you with preparing W2s and 1099s?
