A photo recap of the 2024 Excellence in Education Award, accompanied by a thank you message from Emalyn Lapus, Administrative Director of JCYC College Access Programs. “On May 23rd, the JCYC College Access Programs celebrated its inaugural Excellence in Education Awards Ceremony. We came together to celebrate 45 years of commitment to service at our schools. Throughout this journey, our collective efforts and dedication have given our students from low-income and first-generation backgrounds the opportunities to succeed. I want to express my deepest appreciation to our sponsors, donors, and guests for their generosity and support of this inaugural event. Your contributions were pivotal in creating a memorable evening celebrating our honorees’ resilience, dedication, and academic achievements alongside their families, supporters, mentors, and friends. I want to give a special thank you to our keynote speaker, Sandy Walia of U.S. Bank, for her inspiring words on the transformative power of education and community support. Her encouragement for students to embrace their unique challenges and opportunities resonated deeply, highlighting the crucial role of JCYC College Access Programs in providing unwavering support to our youth. The partnership with U.S. Bank plays a crucial role in ensuring that JCYC’s College Access Programs can maintain high-quality academic and educational services for first-generation students while also expanding our program’s reach to more students. I also want to express my appreciation for the dedication and support of the JCYC Board of Directors, the JCYC Leadership Staff, and especially the JCYC College Access Team, whose efforts made the event a success. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to reconnect with everyone soon.” Sincerely, Emalyn Lapus, Administrative Director JCYC College Access

Fifty-four years ago this week, JCYC was founded by young people who stood in solidarity with other communities of color to fight for the inclusion of ethnic studies. While still committed to the organization’s roots in San Francisco’s Japantown community, JCYC has evolved and grown into one of San Francisco’s most successful child and youth development organizations, which annually serves over 7,000 young people from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. In 1980, JCYC helped organize and lead one of the first citywide collaborations to successfully pursue federal resources for college access support for low-income AAPI youth in San Francisco. Since that time, JCYC has become one of the City’s primary providers of college advising services, and manages the only comprehensive Upward Bound program in San Francisco. Over the past 45 years, these programs have assisted over 40,000 students to become the first in their families to enroll in and graduate from college. 🔗 Help us spread the word to support JCYC!
