Born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant grandparents, Dr. Ochoa made history in 1993 as the first Hispanic woman to travel into space. She went on to lead NASA’s Johnson Space Center as director from 2013-2018, becoming only the second woman—and the first Hispanic—to hold this prestigious position. Dr. Ochoa’s journey includes earning a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford, serving as chair of the National Science Board, and in 2024, receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her extraordinary contributions to science and education.
