Our Director participated in the Republic of Korea–UN Office of Disarmament Affairs Joint Conference in Seoul, with global experts exploring assurance, technology’s dual role, international cooperation, and capacity-building for future leaders.
Valuable to be part of a Republic of Korea – UN Office of Disarmament Affairs Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Affairs in Seoul these last two days. Focus of this event has been strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention and biological non-proliferation broadly. Government officials and experts from about two dozen countries in attendance. Broad commitment expressed around sustaining/building the norm around prohibition of biological weapons. Practical sessions on: ways to build assurance that others are adhering to BWC; how new technologies (e.g. AI) can help vs. can deepen risks; new approaches to international cooperation around prevention and response to biological events; new challenges in biosafety and biosecurity; transparency and confidence-building measures; developing the next generation of diplomats and scientists to take on these problems; and the latest information on UN Sec Gen mechanism for investigating bio events. New developments in the BWC can only come with substantial time and effort and building of persistent coalitions. This conference underscored that there are many leaders from around the world that want the same constructive changes to happen and are willing to work over time in an concerted effort to get there.
