Did you know Digital Twins will become the next "Industrial Revolution" according to immersive technology pioneer, Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira. She created the C.A.V.E.(Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) in 1992 using VR with rear projectors to immerse people together to collaborate in VR. She spoke at Miami XR at the University of Miami and shared where XR should go next. She currently works as the Agere Chair at the Department of Computer Science University of Central Florida.
🔹 The Growing Importance of Digital Twins
Cruz emphasized that as our world becomes increasingly complex, digital twins will bridge the gap between the physical and digital realms. They provide a bidirectional, real-time connection that allows industries to test, simulate, and optimize processes at unprecedented speeds. From automotive to healthcare, digital twins are not just about efficiency—they’re about saving lives, accelerating innovation, and transforming workflows.
🔹 Breaking Free from Dashboards
One of the key takeaways was the need to move beyond traditional dashboards in digital twin visualization. The future is not just about analyzing data on a screen—it’s about stepping inside the digital world to interact with information spatially. Whether through VR, AR, or alternative immersive technologies, digital twins should offer contextual, intuitive, and role-specific experiences.
🔹 XR: More Than Just Headsets
Cruz challenged a common misconception: XR is not just about headsets. Just as we have different shoes for different occasions, we need diverse immersive solutions tailored to specific industry needs—whether it’s a CAVE system for collaborative engineering, AR overlays for field inspections, or fully immersive VR for remote design. True innovation in XR comes from adapting technology to the problem, not the other way around.
🔹 We Need Disruptive Thinking
One of the most powerful messages from her talk: XR is evolving, but it is not yet disruptive enough. Since the rise of consumer VR, we’ve seen incremental improvements, not radical breakthroughs. We need to push beyond entertainment applications and integrate high-performance computing, AI-driven simulations, and real-time complex data processing into XR.
🌟 Takeaway for the XR Community: We must think beyond current hardware constraints and develop solutions that truly merge digital and physical realities in meaningful ways. Let’s build the next generation of immersive technology that doesn’t just replicate, but revolutionizes how we work, learn, and interact.
