Heads up, Shawnee Library users: Shawnee Library will be closing for HVAC and related systems replacement beginning Monday, August 19, with anticipated reopening late October. This past spring Shawnee Library received a significant makeover, receiving new shelving, carpet, paint, restrooms and signage as well as other critical infrastructure improvements. However, due to unanticipated lead times for equipment, this important HVAC work was not able to be completed during the previous closure. We anticipate that once this work is complete, Shawnee Library will be ready to serve our community for many years to come. No services will be available at Shawnee during the closure period. Returns, holds pickup, public computers, printing and copying, meeting rooms and access to the collection are available at our other 13 locations across the county, including Merriam Plaza Library (6120 Slater St., Merriam) and Monticello Library (22435 W. 66th St, Shawnee). Both locations feature a convenient drive-thru for holds pick-up and materials return.

    • An announcement graphic from Johnson County Library stating, "Attention Shawnee Library Users! Shawnee will be closed August 19 through late October." The text is displayed on an orange and white striped background with a small image of a 'CLOSED' sign at the top.

Why are County Librarian Tricia Suellentrop and Library Board President Kelly Kilgore smiling? Because the sale of what we once affectionately called "Lackman Library" is official! The new owners are Newkirk Novak Construction Partners, Inc. The sale was final on July 23rd and all proceeds from the sale ($2,050,000 less brokerage commission fees) will be placed in the Library's reserve funds with the intention of using those funds for future Library projects. As you might remember, Lenexa City Center Library replaced the Lackman Library. We all have so many great memories of Lackman Library! We will always fondly remember Lackman as the first Library without a card catalog as the Library took its first steps into the computer age—and we're excited to continually improve Library buildings and services for the residents of Johnson County.

Hey friends! Have you ever wanted to be in a video for the Library? (Or do you now, now that we've asked? 🤭). If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you! We're looking for families in all forms: caregivers of all ages and their kiddos, multigenerational families who come to the Library together, families new to the Library, and all families who feel comfortable on camera to help us highlight aspects of the Library's 6 by 6 program. No speaking is necessary! You'll be demonstrating a skill and we will apply a voiceover. Filming will take place in or near one of our newer Library buildings in early-mid August and while the time commitment is flexible to accommodate your schedule, we anticipate needing no more than an hour of your time. The videos made will be used to inform people about our newly redesigned 6 by 6 program! If you are interested, please fill out this form and we'll be in touch. If you know someone who might be, please share this with them! https://lnkd.in/gBdhjkzq
