🗣 IF YOU CLAIM TO SUPPORT EARLY-STAGE, OVERLOOKED FOUNDERS, YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM GRACE 😡 On the latest episode of the podcast, I went into one of my epic rants about people who claim to want to empower early-stage, overlooked founders, but they sometimes don't give them grace in the moments when the weight of all the founders are bearing doesn't allow them to show up as their best selves. 🌻 In the clip below, I gave Shahab Kaviani of FounderWell his flowers because I canceled an intro call ten minutes before the call, because I was struggling with my mental health. I was depressed all of Q4 last year because I wanted to launch my new VC firm, Kabila Ventures, as a new manager with no previous VC experience. I downloaded the Carta VC fundraising template for new managers, which, in retrospect, was for new VCs who had previous experience at least as an investor or working at a VC firm. After I reviewed the Carta deck, I had a sinking feeling that I could never put together a deck that would help me launch Kabila Ventures and it threw me into a three month depression because I never worked as a VC. To Shahab's credit, he responded to my cancellation email during the time we were supposed to be speaking and asked me to ping him after the holidays to reschedule. The irony is, during one of our mentorship calls, Shahab asked me if I knew Mike Chan, who just completed the VC Lab program. Mike connected with me, recommended VC Lab as a way to launch my firm, and graciously spent his social capital by letting me use his name as a referral in my VC Lab application. 🚨 THIS IS ANOTHER KEY POINT: Please spend your social capital on overlooked founders. Social capital leads to financial capital 💰. And overlooked founders often don't have the social capital they need to get ahead in these startup streets. 🔥 Flash forward to October 2024 and I just completed VC Lab's cohort 15, which started with 300 would-be new fund managers, but only 92 people finished. That's a 70% attrition rate. 😱 And I'm on pace to launch Kabila Ventures next spring. I could have done so before the end of the year, but I increased my goals to ensure maximum impact. ❗️Bottom line: If Shahab hadn't been so gracious, I wouldn't be here today about to realize my dream as a new VC poised to make in impact in the world for overlooked founders. 🤗 So if you're holding space for early-stage, overlooked founders, please keep in mind they may be dealing with stressors you can't imagine, and give them grace.
