Joint Office of Energy and Transportation
Government Administration
Accelerating an electrified transportation system that is convenient, reliable, affordable, accessible, and equitable.
About us
The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation was created through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to facilitate collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Joint Office will align resources and expertise across the two departments toward leveraged outcomes. The office will be a critical component in the implementation of the BIL, providing support and expertise to a multitude of programs that seek to deploy a network of electric vehicle chargers, zero-emission fueling infrastructure, and zero-emission transit and school buses. The scope of the Joint Office will continue to evolve as directed by both departments.

The Federal Highway Administration has designated Round 8 of alternative fuel corridors (AFCs) in six states and Puerto Rico to support sustainable mobility nationwide. Take a look!
We asked, you answered! Where should we designate Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs) to help electric vehicle and freight truck drivers access EV chargers and alternative fuel options on highways? ICYMI, we announced that FHWA, in collaboration with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, has unveiled Round 8 of AFC designations in six states and Puerto Rico. These corridors are critical for supporting cleaner, more sustainable transportation across the nation. https://lnkd.in/eeeH6Br

Food for thought regarding grocery delivery methods: "Gregory Keoleian and colleagues at the university's UM-Center for Sustainable Systems found that using an electric vehicle to pick up groceries could cut emissions by as much as half, compared to a gas-powered vehicle. They also found that home delivery could be an even better option. That’s because with a delivery vehicle, orders are often clustered, with a driver dropping off not just your groceries, but also hitting neighbors during the same run... "E-bikes can save a lot on emissions and they are substantially cheaper to operate compared to automobiles. Keoleian says the study he worked on also looked at emerging technologies such as drones and sidewalk robots, finding that they could significantly reduce carbon emissions on small deliveries, such as restaurant takeout." Thank you to the Volpe team for sharing their expertise!
Our own Mike Scarpino recently delivered a keynote presentation at the 2024 AltWheels Fleet Day in Norwood, MA. He provided an update on the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, the Charging & Fueling Infrastructure Program, as well as an update on the activities of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. Alt Wheels Fleet Day is one of the largest meetings of corporate and municipal Fleet Managers in the northeast region to see and hear the latest in fleet transportation technologies, electrification and alternative fuels, and fleet management practices. Our team provides technical and programmatic expertise on energy and transportation systems to the Joint Office via an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory. Thank you, Mike—and thank you to Heather Richardson and Stephen Costa from the Energy Analysis & Sustainability Division who not only support the Joint Office, but also the Department of Energy’s Clean Cities & Communities coalitions from the Northeast Region, which we’ve supported since 2011. The Joint Office got together for an in-person all-hands meeting last week at Berkeley Lab! We strategized on priorities for the coming year, as well as engaged directly with state and community stakeholders in electrification. ⚡ Highlights included presentations from each Joint Office team and an enlightening Bay Area electrification panel with experts from Caltrain, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and BART. We also experienced multiple transportation and technology options firsthand with lab and local tours: 🚲 An alternative fuels bike tour stopping at Berkeley's Center Street Garage with solar, charging, and bike valet parking, the Urban Farm Oasis selling biodiesel, and a DC fast-charging spot experiencing 100% utilization! 🚗 A Waymo tour to learn about autonomous vehicle technology. 💡 A visit to the Advanced Light Source scientific user facility, which has many research applications, including materials analysis for battery technology advancements. https://lnkd.in/gyHAD-ak 🏢 A peek at FLEXLAB® and Systems Integration, the world's most advanced building efficiency testbed, including load management capabilities. https://lnkd.in/gmAbDeE3 🌲 A walk in the redwoods to recharge! Our thanks to everyone who hosted us to expand our minds in true Berkeley tradition and get us to the next generation of mobility! As always, check out our website for program information. https://driveelectric.gov/

📣🔌 Automakers and consumers: You asked for clear guidelines to make the charging experience easier and safer. We worked with SAE International on bringing the J3400 connector to a Recommended Practice. For automakers, this step in the standards process means that a framework is now available to use and deploy an interoperable, standardized version of the original Tesla-developed North America Charging Standard (NACS) connector. For consumers, this means it will be easier to choose electric mobility, wherever you drive or charge. ⚡ Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gf-p6exm
