On this day, we remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001, when 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda carried out the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil. The coordinated hijackings and suicide attacks targeted New York City and Washington, D.C., resulting in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives.
