Congratulations to the Jonesboro Municipal Airport for being named 2024 Arkansas Airport of the Year by the Arkansas Division of Aeronautics! According to a news release by the City of Jonesboro, the airport has garnered statewide attention for rebuilding to a higher standard after severe tornado damage in 2020. “The airport is an asset to the community and will play an even bigger role in the continued growth and prosperity of not only Jonesboro but all of Northeast Arkansas," said Mayor Harold Copenhaver. “Significant local, state and federal partnerships contribute to the growth and success of the airport, including maintaining a runway 150 feet in width.” Copenhaver also acknowledged U.S. Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton and Representative Rick Crawford for their support. Lengthening the runway is anticipated in 2025 and 2026. Bids for a new terminal may be let as early as next month, with construction in late spring of 2025. The city has established the Jonesboro Municipal Airport Commission, which consists of seven board members, to provide recommendations concerning all airport matters. The Airport Manager, appointed by the Airport Commission, has the responsibility for day-to-day operations. However, the Airport Commission is responsible for the operation and development needs of the airport, as well as the compliance with all federal, state and local regulations. The airport is located at 3901 Lindbergh Drive, approximately three miles east of the Central Business District (CBD) of Jonesboro, with property consisting of approximately 1,000 acres. It is classified as a commercial service airport by the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. Currently, the airport is served by Southern Airways Express which provides three round trip flights per day on average to (STL) St. Louis, Missouri and (BNA) Nashville, Tennessee airports where connecting direct flights can be made to most major U.S. city and international destinations. The proposed primary runway, taxiway and parking ramp pavement strengthening is a critical project for the Jonesboro Municipal Airport, the City of Jonesboro and surrounding communities in Northeast Arkansas. This additional strength will help existing-based-and-itinerant aircraft fully utilize the airport and operate more safely. It will also accommodate much larger aircraft that have needed to use Jonesboro’s facilities for years but were unable to. This will impact fuel sales and other direct revenues to the community and provide a tremendous opportunity for economic growth in a large area of Northeast Arkansas. The ribbon was cut last Friday for the grand opening of the state-of-the-art Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center (NERREC) at Harrisburg. Operated by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, NERREC will conduct research on rice production that maximizes farm income while conserving natural resources. Furthermore, the NERREC Education Program aims to provide youth and adults across the state with an educational experience focused on Arkansas rice farming. The ceremony featured many guest speakers who helped bring the center to completion, with additional remarks by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, U.S. Congressman Rick Crawford, and Arkansas Senator Ron Caldwell. Jonesboro Unlimited has been awarded a $700,000 grant to support small business development and expansion by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). The grant will support the JumpStart Partnership, which will help local entrepreneurs and small business owners find the assistance they need to get started and grow. The initiative will act as a single resource to connect entrepreneurs with service providers across Northeast Arkansas. Additionally, it will increase awareness and expand those services by providing more program opportunities, events, and advocacy at local, regional, and state levels. The grant aids Jonesboro Unlimited in its dedication to the advancement of economic success for the city and region. “Thank you to the Economic Development Administration for its continued investment in Northeast Arkansas through entrepreneurship and small business support,” said Mark Young, President and CEO of Jonesboro Unlimited. “It is an integral part of our five-year strategic plan, and we look forward to better supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem.” The JumpStart Partnership is based on a proven model that has worked for other communities. It will increase the success rates of entrepreneurs throughout Northeast Arkansas by guiding them to the helpful services they require. The project also hopes to benefit area companies when entrepreneurs need their services. “The JumpStart Partnership is a very exciting opportunity for Jonesboro,” said Steven Lamm, Vice President of Jonesboro Unlimited. “We look forward to supporting and enhancing the work already happening through dedicated organizations in our area.” This project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the East Arkansas Planning & Development District (EAPDD) with funding by the EDA under the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2023. #econdev #economicdevelopment #NEA #northeastarkansas #entrepreneur #businessstartup #startup
