All Children Deserve to Experience the Joy of Reading

About us

At Joyful Readers, we have an ambitious plan to help Philly students gain the skills they need to become successful, confident, and yes…joyful readers! Just 33% of Philadelphia’s K-3 students read on grade level. While this challenge affects all Philadelphians, Black and Latinx communities are disproportionately affected: 27% of Black and 22% of Latinx students read on grade level, compared to 52% of their White peers. In September 2022, we are planning to launch a cohort of full-time AmeriCorps tutors who will serve directly in schools to provide daily, intensive tutoring to Philly elementary students. The Joyful Readers team is working to ensure that students in systemically under-resourced schools gain the skills they need to succeed in school, at work, and in their daily lives.

It's another #TutorTuesday! Today our shout out goes to Juny! When asked about her service with Joyful Readers, Juny had this to say: "Although challenging at times, this work is truly filled with purpose and inspiration. When I walk down the halls of Lewis Elkin Elementary School, I know they are filled with future creatives, writers, doctors, lawyers, and leaders of change. I am beyond grateful to be working alongside them and it brings me joy to my heart that I am a guide assisting down that path to their greatness.  I look forward to the many milestones we will achieve together as a team!" Thank you for serving with us, Juny!

It's #TutorTuesday again! This week's shout out goes to our tutor Jolene! When asked why she chose to serve with us this year, this is what Jolene had to say: "I chose to serve with Joyful Readers because I wanted to share my love for reading with others and introduce them to an entire world of possibilities that they might not have had access to or had even known about to begin with. In the few weeks that I’ve been serving, I’ve already had some students express a newfound interest in reading, and it’s made me even more excited to see their growth throughout the year." Thank you for your passion and commitment, Jolene!

Happy #TutorTuesday! This week we are shouting out our tutor Dea! From a young age, Dea has had a vibrant love for books and reading, but also has been sadly aware of the struggles others face with literacy. Because of this, Dea joined our cohort to help foster the love of reading she has in our Philly students. We are so excited to see all the great work Dea will do this year!

We're throwing it back to 2 weeks ago, when we celebrated our tutors at Ready, Set, SERVE! Thank you to Dr. Debora Borges-Carrera for speaking -- your words of encouragement to our tutors as they graduate from training into serving students in schools were positive & inspiring! 🙏🏽

Happy first #TutorTuesday of the new school year! To kick off, we are shouting out our senior tutor, Brennan! Returning to serve with us for a second year, Brennan is an incredible, passionate, dedicated tutor that is excited to make a difference in the lives of Philly students for another year. When asked what he was looking forward to this year, he said getting to know all of his new students and showing his massive hat collection to them! We give a huge thank you to Brennan, and if you'd like a chance to meet Brennan in person and hear him speak about his impactful work, you can join us for our Back to School Fundraiser next Tuesday, October 8th!
