You may be eligible for a federal grant, but do you really want it? 😕 Federal grants come with a slew of reporting requirements. No joke—CFR 200 has as many pages as its code. It's a medium-length book. 😭 With that said, there's a lot you have to consider when it comes to reporting how you spend federal funds: tracking codes for expenditures, how to track time, RFQs, SOPs, required policies, etc. You need to be honest with yourself about whether your organization has the internal capacity to take on these tasks. 😬 If not, you'll either want to move on OR (aha!) plan for the work by allocating funds in the grant budget to expand your capacity. 😇 The higher the award, the harrier things get, too. Starting in October, recipients who receive more than $1 million in federal funds in a given fiscal year will be automatically audited. This is actually a higher threshold than the current audit trigger of $750 thousand. 😖 I've attached 2 CFR 200 to this post in case you want to do some light reading. 😘 Need help with a grant application? 🌳 Forests provide many benefits: they're a source of profit. They preserve watersheds. They prevent flooding, store carbon, shelter wildlife, and offer recreation. So it's no surprise that grant funding exists to manage them and reforest previously forested areas. 🌳 🌲Below is a list of 37 grants available for reforestation and forest management projects in the United States. If you're looking for funding, there's plenty out there—and this list isn't even exhaustive! 🌲 🌴 Need help finding grants? We developed this form to help people determine whether they're ready and eligible for one of the U.S. Forest Service grants that will open in a few weeks. The form asks 25 yes/no questions, so it doesn't take long to complete. The Forest Service offers three annual grants in the fall: 1. Wood Products Infrastructure Assistance 2. Wood Innovations 3. Community Wood WPIA focuses on delivering funding for sawmill and other wood-product production sites near federal or Tribal woodlands. 50% of the materials the facilities process must come from ecological restoration efforts on these lands. This grant awards up to $1,000,000 in funding. The Wood Innovations program awards up to $300,000 in funding for various activities that support the wood-product market. These activities can range from engineering studies to marketing efforts to equipment upgrades. The Community Wood program awards up to $1,000,000 (and in special cases up to $1,500,000) for capital projects involving innovative wood products or wood-based energy systems, such as boilers. WPIA typically opens at the beginning of October and is due at the start of December. The Wood Innovations and Community Wood grants open two weeks later mid-November and are due mid-December. Each provides about an 8-week turnaround time. Don't wait to book help, though! Rates go up after the grants open, and grant writers often fill their calendars early. If you're eligible (fill out the questionnaire!) and ready to apply (eh hem ... ditto the questionnaire aside), contact us! We've been working hard to grow our capacity to meet the demand to write these particular grants. Contact us today! I regularly keep tabs on programs available for biochar research, production, and application. While not exhaustive, the list below includes major funding sources. For projects involving the construction of biochar facilities, the best source of federal funding will soon open for applications. The U.S. Forest Service will open its landowner support, community wood, and wood innovations grant programs in October. This means we're down to weeks before things kick off. If you want assistance with writing, don't wait until the last minute to book someone. Grant writers typically schedule themselves out months in advance, and they commonly charge extra once an FOA (funding opportunity announcement) has been released. Hiring a professional is important because it dramatically increases your chances of success. Consider: the No. 1 reason why applicants don't get funding is because they don't follow the application guidelines. A simple labeling error in the Budget Table, for example, can get an application tossed. Professionals help prevent such mistakes and, if anything, let you know that your project doesn't qualify for funding—saving you hours and hours of work. Jozana Grant Services knows wood products, and we're best known for our experience with this grant. Some people blame the government for the lack of economic growth. Others blame racism. Others point to the geology of a given region or culture at large or corruption. 😡 In reality, the forces challenging economic growth are many and variable. All the above may be true in any given situation, but reasons can't typically be so easily distilled to one or two points. ⚗ This is why economic development is a team sport and why no single "fix" will solve the problem. Consider an economic development project going on in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.💲 The county has historically high unemployment rates, and there is little by way of industry. To solve this issue, the regional economic development agency has had to leverage what resources the community offers: 1. The regional workforce is over 100,000, and as we've mentioned, it has a high unemployment rate. So there's plenty of labor available. 👨⚕️ 👩🏭 👨💼 👷♀️ 2. It's close to an interstate, and two major rail lines run through the county, making it an appealing logistical option. 🛣 3. A business-friendly state government. 👨💼 👩💼 It also has had to address what it lacks: 1. Electrical capacity for heavy industry 🏗 2. Natural gas lines ♨ 3. Water capacity 🚱 4. Water resilience (source dependability) ♒ 5. Available land 🌳 6. Geology conducive to major construction ⛰ These obstacles aren't by any means small. BUT Rockcastle County is making it happen! It goes to show that economic development is possible when communities unify to address multi-faceted issues. 😄 Of course, grants have been part of their success story. And for that portion of things, Jozana Grant Services is available to help. ✍ Economic development is a powerful tool for positive community change, and we aim to support it. Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are awesome resources for businesses and nonprofits looking to make an impact in low-income communities. CDFIs can be banks, credit unions, loan funds, microloan funds, or venture capital providers. The key is that they're mission-driven financial institutions that serve low-income communities. They help families finance their first homes, support community residents starting businesses, and invest in local health centers, schools, or community centers. CDFIs strive to foster economic opportunity and revitalize neighborhoods. We've had positive experiences interacting with CDFIs. If you're looking to create economic impact in your areas, we encourage you to work with one. Here's a link to a list of Federally recognized CDFIs across the country: https://lnkd.in/gzxNfHSq.
