In honor of #womanownedbusinessmonth, we wanted to take some time to highlight our incredible founder and CEO, Jenny Windle, MPA. Jenny created JPW Communications in 2015 after working in the public sector for nearly 20 years to build the agency she always hoped to hire. Born from Jenny's spare bedroom, JPW is celebrating its ninth year of business this month 🥳 Since those early days, JPW's mission has been to serve local government exclusively and enthusiastically because we believe they deserve the best in strategic communication. From all of us at JPW, thank you Jenny for leading with passion and purpose. We're loving being in our #JPWEra #ErasTour #femaleceomoves

Today marks another year around the sun for JPW. Traditionally ninth anniversaries are celebrated with gifts of pottery and wicker, which speaks to our hand-crafted-loving hearts. In our latest blog, we are reflecting on our agency and collective obsession with strategic planning -- two things that require effort, care and vision. We look forward to many more years of curating solutions for our clients and weaving the strategies that lead to their successes. Happy anniversary, JPW! On World Mental Health Day, JPW will be co-presenting a case study on implementing and marketing an important mental health initiative in the San Marcos Unified School District. A partnership between the City of San Marcos, CA and SMUSD, the "Let's Face It. Together." initiative is near and dear to our hearts, as it aims to proactively address mental health in students, families and staff across the district. Join us on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. for a virtual California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) webinar to learn how the campaign branding, messaging and tactics were designed to holistically address barriers to mental health support. Presenters: Amy Ventetuolo, public information officer, San Marcos Unified School District Michelle Bender, city manager, City of San Marcos Jenny Windle, MPA, CEO and co-founder, JPW Baylee Akins, senior marketing and communications manager, JPW Click here to learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/dVktzsav #WorldMentalHealthDay #CAPIO #CAPIOwebinar #Continuingeducation #APR #PRwebinar #SMUSD #CityofSanMarcos #PIO #PublicRelations #MarketingCampaign

Happy Wednesday from JPW’s very own Enid Sinclair and Wednesday Addams (our Senior Managers Courtney Pittam and Baylee Akins), who were on theme right down to the nails and earrings. While they coordinated this to celebrate the start of spooky season, their natural juxtaposition of styles, personalities and interests are so spot on to this famous duo that this could have been a snapshot from any other month in the year (and if you’ve seen them interact, you know what we mean!). It’s in the small silly moments like these where we’re reminded to celebrate what makes us different and not be afraid to have a little fun. 🎃 👻 #WednesdayAddams #SpookySeason #October #TheAddamsFamily

🔍 At JPW, research is at the heart of everything we do. Research informs our strategies and often shifts our approach. Our new work with North County Transit District is a perfect example. NCTD is revitalizing 11 of its transit stations into vibrant destinations with housing, parks, businesses and community gathering spaces through transit oriented development (TOD). Through research, we uncovered a broad objective, inspired by NCTD leadership's vision to be more than a transit agency through community connections. We also learned that focusing on NCTD's regional investments was most important to the communities across the five cities in the service area. Instead of focusing on 11 separate projects, our campaign is broader, communicating about NCTD's investments in the region's future. Thanks to research, we are speaking to the needs of residents and the vision for North County. Explore our work with NCTD’s TOD transit oriented development projects here: https://lnkd.in/guuGgS-k.

When disaster strikes, one of the most important tools in your toolbox is pre-approved messaging. It allows you to get information out sooner and focus on understanding and responding to the nuances of the crisis at hand. It also helps manage your scarcest resource during an emergency: time. ⏰ Here are three quick tips for getting pre-approved content ready before disaster strikes: 1️⃣ Identify key scenarios: Start by identifying the most likely disaster scenarios your community might face — natural disasters, public health emergencies, security threats, etc. Give special consideration to threats that may be specific to your community or agency. 2️⃣ Collaborate with stakeholders: Work with relevant departments and partner agencies to develop advance messaging that is consistent, accurate, and aligned with your overall emergency response plan. Involve key stakeholders early to ensure the content meets their needs and can be quickly released when needed. 3️⃣ Review and update regularly: Pre-approved messaging should be treated as a living document. Schedule regular reviews to update the content based on new information, changes in protocols, or lessons learned from previous incidents. Not sure where to start? While we can't predict the future, our team's collective 50+ years of #PIO experience with #government agencies gives us a solid understanding of what scenarios to expect. We'd love to help you get started. #CrisisCommunications #EmergencyPreparedness #CrisisComms #PublicSafety #Wildfire #NaturalDisaster

Here's a dilemma: you know the public wants an update on an important issue, but there isn't any news to share. Enter the wonder that is a ✨ non-update, update ✨. We find these useful during construction projects and emergencies alike (everything in between, too!). The goal is to let the public know that things are in progress. This accomplishes two things: it politely acknowledges the delay while reassuring everyone that someone is at the wheel. A real update needs to follow, but a non-update can buy you time. Here are a few tips on what to include in your non-update update when it seems like there is nothing to report to the public: -Emergency: Teams are responding to [insert name of emergency/disaster] and more information will be available. -Construction: The schedule of [insert name of project] is currently being finalized, and the project team is working as quickly and safely as possible to bring [insert benefits of project] to [insert name of community]. -Project approval: [Insert benefit of project] is very important to [insert name of community]. Our team wants to get it right, so we are working to finalize our path forward, and we look forward to starting [insert project name] soon. #NonUpdate #ProjectUpdates #CommunityOutreach

Checklists never go out of style, and go-bags are essential for anyone who might be called into an EOC at a moment’s notice. In honor of #EmergencyPreparednessMonth, here’s a quick rundown of what we’ve packed in our EOC go-bags over the years. Some items are for the job, some are for you, and all are critical when duty calls. BONUS: We’ve also included a real-life list of places we’ve been when that call arrived and we had to grab our "go bag" and hit the road to the EOC. FOR YOU: ✅ Deodorant ✅ Toothbrush and toothpaste ✅ Touchup makeup kit, hair ties and brush to be camera ready ✅ Medication ✅ Contacts or glasses ✅ Change of clothes (be sure they're comfy) ✅ Snacks ✅ Gum or mints for those up close and personal conversations in the EOC FOR THE JOB: ✅ Proper ID to get your clearance into an emergency scene ✅ Phone, laptop, portable printer, thumb drives and extension cords ✅ Charging plugs, back-up batteries ✅ Hard copies of maps, plans, pre-approved messages, phone trees, etc. ✅ Pens, paper, stapler, scissors, tape ✅ Camera with extra batteries ✅ Battery-powered radio ✅ Official agency jacket, polo or other outerwear with logo for easy identification ✅ Official magnetic agency seal for impromptu pressers ✅ Confidence in your training and a can-do attitude Jenny Windle, MPA was on her way to a Dodger game when she heard on the radio that one of her city's council members had just been arrested. Curveball to the EOC. Susanne Bankhead was enjoying a 4th of July weekend when a plane landed on a crowded beach in 2015. Let the EOC ring. Leslie Spring was babysitting a house full of friends' kids who were attending a wedding when a local beach bluff collapsed. She drove down the aisle to the EOC. What's the most unique thing you keep in your go-bag?
