I went to sleep on the first of January 2017... and I didn’t wake up for 3 days. It wasn’t just a long nap – it was a sign of what I had been ignoring for far too long. For years, I had been grinding, pushing myself with the mentality of 'I'll sleep when I'm dead. The warning signs were all there, but I ignored them. I told myself I had too much to do and too many people counting on me. Over time, my health started slipping. I gained weight. Stopped exercising. My meals were more about convenience than nutrition. And the hardest part? I wasn’t present with my family. That wake-up call – those 3 days – was the first that made me realize that if I kept going this way, I wasn’t just risking burnout... I was risking my life and relationships. That moment was the first of two significant life-changing events that changed everything. I’m thrilled to embark on a new chapter as a Maverick on a Mission, transitioning from my Navy and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory careers where I challenged the status quo and drove innovation to a new role where I can challenge others to do the same. My first step this week is attending the Rich Litvin Intensive in Santa Fe, New Mexico, marking a bold start to my mission. I am in a servants role this as part of the leadership team and expect many opportunities to learn, lead, inspire, and encourage. As I navigate this exciting transition, I am driven by the power of resilience, truth, and the importance of pursuing passion. From Sailing the Seas to Sailing Through Life's Storms. For 37 relentless years, I served our nation. Be it turbulent seas or the prestigious halls of The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) - I was there. This journey saw me: - Tying the knot. - Raising four beautiful children. - Earning the title 'Sailor of the Year' not once but twice. - Climbing the ranks - starting as a Seaman Recruit to becoming Principal Staff at JHU/APL. - Selection as a Limited Duty Officer and ACINT Specialist. - Making 15 crucial deployments in the interest of our national security. - Streamlining complex system designs in the Advanced Capability Build (ACB) program, which I served for 16 successful years. - Finally, I am retiring from JHU/APL as I celebrate my 55th birthday. By typical standards, my life is a success story. Homeowner, car owner, blessed with financial stability, ready to retire. But something was missing. Here are the less obvious challenges. I danced with depression that spiraled into burnout for 15 long years. During those darkest hours, I: - Lost my father and mother. - Fell into a coma and went to the hospital due to extreme exhaustion. - Witnessed my wife battle bone cancer, then lose her mother, and eventually leave me. - Became a stranger to my children and haven't met my grandchildren. But I found a beacon in that darkness - Jesus, my Lord and Savior. Today, I embark on a new journey of serving the Lord and leading my faith-based company, J.S. Simpson & Associates. These trials shaped me into the man I am today: a child of God, a strategic advisor, and a catalyst who ignites the spark in high-achieving leaders and entrepreneurs. Build Bridges to Eliminate Gaps. Collaboration Drives Us Forward In the workplace, retreating into our work is easy, especially when under pressure. While being completely involved in our part of a project may offer comfort, it confines us, isolates teams, and stifles innovation. As I navigated through diverse roles, from the military to the corporate sectors, I witnessed firsthand how divisions undermine morale and mission. Building silos in the workplace: - Limits collaboration and cross-functional synergy. - Creates isolation and misunderstandings, leading to conflict. - Misses opportunities for innovation due to lack of diverse input. I recall a case when a segregated approach seemed efficient during a major project until we missed critical interfaces when integrating functional segments, causing costly delays. This was my wake-up call. Keeping teams in silos can lead to a narrow vision and missed opportunities, making us less competitive and adaptable on a rapidly evolving project. We shifted our strategy to prioritize open communication and collaborative problem-solving sessions. We integrated team members into complete product teams and hosted weekly agile product team lead meetings to align our goals and bridge our segments. Recurring product team lead meetings led to rapid problem identification and solution, ensuring no missed interfaces.
