Jump$tart is saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Mariotti, founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a Jump$tart National Partner. Jump$tart CEO Laura L. Levine, who knew Steve for many years, remembers him as inspirational, both optimistic and realistic, and a really great guy. Our thoughts are with the NFTE community and Steve’s friends and family.
The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) community is deeply saddened to share news of the passing of our beloved founder, Steve Mariotti, who died this weekend at the age of 71. Nearly 40 years ago, Steve started NFTE while teaching at Jane Addams H.S. in the Bronx. He recognized the power of entrepreneurship education to help at-risk students take ownership of their futures. He saw how unlocking a learner’s passions can help them live those passions out in the world and build a life for themselves. Steve’s vision has helped millions of students in the U.S. and around the globe become business owners, leaders, and life-long entrepreneurs. As our staff team reflected yesterday on Steve’s impact, we noted his ebullience, positivity, warmth, generosity, and leadership. Steve had the ability to make every person he came in contact with feel like the most important person in the room. He started a genuine global movement, and as NFTE’s current leader, I will always remember the encouragement and advice he gave, which I will continue to carry as we work hard to extend his extraordinary legacy. In the end, the impact of Steve’s life is most deeply present in the students and alumni who have been directly affected by his vision. At its core, NFTE is about telling learners, no matter their background, that THEY MATTER. With the right business skills and community support, ANYONE can take their ideas and passions and turn them into reality. Steve, I will miss you, and I’m proud to continue your integral work to empower and equip the next generation.
