Since World War II, approximately 18 million Americans have served in the Armed Forces, representing around 7% of the total adult population in the United States. If you are a member of this distinguished group, you may be eligible for benefits and compensation through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻? The term "combat veteran" commonly evokes images of individuals who have endured direct engagement in firefights, IED attacks, or other confrontations with adversaries. However, government entities like the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adopt a broader definition when categorizing combat veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) defines a "Combat Veteran" as an individual who has received hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay at any time during their military service, has been awarded a combat service medal, or possesses military service documentation indicating that they served in a combat theater. Asbestos, valued for its insulation, fire resistance, and durability, was widely used in military applications during the 1980s. However, its fiber's inability to break down in the human body poses serious health risks. Reports show that asbestos exposure among veterans has been linked to over 40,000 deaths and significant long-term health threats. 𝗦𝗼, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝘀𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝘀? Asbestos is valuable for waterproofing and insulation, as well as reducing friction in machinery. Its beneficial properties have led to its use in various applications, including: 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱; 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 Asbestos was extensively used in shipyards in the 1920s, with the U.S. consuming over 633 million pounds between 1932 and 1937. By 1939, it was recognized as crucial in shipbuilding, putting Navy service members at increased risk for asbestos exposure. During World War II, shipyard workers handled asbestos products, exposing around 4.5 million people. The risks of asbestos are notably high in manufacturing and repair processes, as well as in construction materials. Additionally, veterans were exposed to asbestos during the September 11 response efforts when Army National Guardsmen were deployed in New York for security and cleanup. Reports are claiming that the World Trade Center contains over 400 tons of asbestos. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, only 50 percent of veterans who need mental health treatment will get the treatment they need and are entitled to. Eligible veterans can file VA Disability Mental Health claims, providing extra benefits. Furthermore, the VA Schedule of Ratings Disabilities categorizes several mental illnesses eligible for disability compensation. A quick list reads: 1. Amnesia 2. Cognitive disorders (diseases affecting the brain) 3. Anxiety (which includes PTSD, panic disorder, and other phobias) 4. Dissociative disorders (for instance, multiple personalities or forgetting where you were or what you did) 5. Depression 6. Bulimia and anorexia 7. And adjustment disorders (for example, feeling stressed to the point of being self-destructive) Recent studies conducted by the RAND Center for Military Health Policy Research indicate that approximately 20% of veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan experience either post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression. Failing to file a claim provides no advantage. You are not required to face challenges without support. Tag someone who needs to see this one! #mentalhealth #veteransclaims #veterans #militarylife
