https://lnkd.in/eK3RBHfi I now live on the Caribbean island of Curacao and I have to say they do social media right down here. I like to post funny memes, and see what friends and family are doing. But here, Social Media is the government agencies webpage, or the utilities page where you go to see what is happening. If you run a business here, (or anywhere in Caribbean or South/Central America) you have a Facebook page and a WhatsApp business page. When we want a restaurant we go to FB not the web, or when we need a mechanic, we are on WhatsApp. I post this because when I read about how bad social media is in the States, I realize that we just don’t use it correctly. We’ve been trained to think of it a certain way and to look at how to leverage it. I've had many friends vow to stay off FB because it’s toxic. I see toxic people and I avoid them, not technology. I find it great to see how clever FB and Instagram are used to make reservations, set up appointments or just convey useful info. I will still post anything I find to be funny or insightful, but I use social media for so much more than that. I would hate to see the US give up on a great set of tools because we lack imagination like the rest of the world.
