A Journey Through Time: From Pandemic Silence to IT Outage Chaos As a frequent traveler, I’ve now experienced two of the most starkly contrasting times in air travel. On March 24, 2020, I navigated through airports that were eerily empty due to the US shutdown from COVID-19. Fast forward to July 19, 2024, and I found myself amidst the chaos following the massive IT outage. The contrast is striking and highlights two different kinds of crises: one driven by health and the other by technology. These experiences remind me of an essential lesson in IT: the importance of communication and thorough testing. Early in my career, I led a project refreshing assets in manufacturing plants. These devices were over ten years old, filled with dirt and dust, and had never been upgraded. Understanding the critical nature of plant operations, I engaged directly with plant managers, facility managers, and line operators—groups that had previously been left out of IT discussions. Meticulous planning, revised schedules, and robust testing and backup procedures resulted in a seamless implementation, with no production line downtime. Plant managers and facility managers personally thanked me for our efforts. This experience taught me that clients who are selecting IT partners should look beyond their technical skills and capabilities. It’s about their culture, their understanding of user experience, and their commitment to building strong relationships.
