This summer, Kairos Power broke ground on the Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor – the first Gen IV reactor to receive a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission – at our site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. With excavation nearly complete, we’re making quick strides toward building. Watch the site come to life with help from our ace design and construction team and learn how this little reactor will make a big impact on Kairos Power’s mission to enable the world’s transition to clean energy. About us
Kairos Power has a mission to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal of dramatically improving people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. We are an engineering company focused on the delivery of a clean, affordable and safe energy solution through the integrated design, licensing and demonstration of advanced reactor technology. Growing from a broad research effort at U.S. universities and national laboratories, Kairos Power was founded to accelerate the development of an innovative nuclear technology that has the potential to transform the energy landscape in the United States and internationally. Kairos Power is focused on reducing technical risk through a novel approach to test iteration often lacking in the nuclear space. Our schedule is driven by the goal of a U.S. demonstration plant before 2030 and a rapid deployment thereafter. The challenge is great, but so too is the opportunity.

BREAKING: Kairos Power and Google have signed a Master Plant Development Agreement, creating a path to deploy a U.S. fleet of advanced nuclear power projects totaling 500 MW by 2035. The deal represents the first corporate agreement for multiple deployments of a single advanced reactor design in the United States. The innovative, multi-plant agreement will support technology development by extending Kairos Power’s iterative demonstration strategy through its first commercial deployments. “Our partnership with Google will enable Kairos Power to quickly advance down the learning curve as we drive toward cost and schedule certainty for our commercial product,” said Mike Laufer, Kairos Power CEO and co-founder. “By coming alongside in the development phase, Google is more than just a customer. They are a partner who deeply understands our innovative approach and the potential it can deliver.” Read the announcement on our website: https://lnkd.in/gmk_P4zk

We are pleased to announce the start of construction on a new facility at Kairos Power's Albuquerque, N.M. campus to produce high-purity molten salt coolant for advanced reactors, starting with the Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Aligned with Kairos Power’s iterative development approach, the Salt Production Facility will build upon lessons learned from the company’s Molten Salt Purification Plant, which successfully produced 14 tons of unenriched Flibe for the non-nuclear Engineering Test Unit (ETU 1.0) demonstration last year. “The facilities we are building in Albuquerque will play a pivotal role in deploying Kairos Power’s clean energy technology with robust safety at an affordable cost,” said Kairos Power Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Edward Blandford. “With the addition of molten salt coolant production, Kairos Power’s Manufacturing Development Campus will soon have all the capabilities we need to deliver the Hermes demonstration reactor and establish a credible path to scale up production for the commercial fleet.” On the same day we broke ground on the Salt Production Facility, Kairos Power held a dedication ceremony for its Manufacturing Development Campus. Guests toured the company’s facilities and heard remarks from local, state, and federal leaders celebrating the transformational site where Kairos Power is piloting key manufacturing capabilities to enable the clean energy transition. “For decades we dreamed of Albuquerque being at the center of the renewable economy, that dream is more and more becoming reality,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We have the right workforce and the right location to be the home of the clean energy manufacturing, and Kairos brings more good-paying jobs for Albuquerque families.” Read the full story on our website: https://lnkd.in/g8A5Cd3C

On August 30, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the proposed Hermes 2 demonstration plant to be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Hermes 2 will build on the lessons learned from the Hermes demonstration reactor, following Kairos Power's iterative development approach. The new Hermes iteration will demonstrate complete plant architecture and supply clean electricity to the grid, further advancing technology, licensing, supply chain, and construction certainty for Kairos Power's commercial deployments. Following consideration of public comments, NRC staff determined that the proposed plant would not significantly affect the quality of the human environment and, therefore, a FONSI is warranted. The issuance of an EA meets the NRC’s obligations under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and marks the conclusion of the Hermes 2 Construction Permit Application (CPA) Environmental Review, just weeks after the completion of the Final Safety Evaluation in July. “We are pleased with the continued progress toward issuance of the Hermes 2 construction permit, enabled by the innovations and increased efficiencies we have realized in collaboration with the NRC staff,” said Darrell Gardner, Kairos Power Senior Licensing Director. “We look forward to continued implementation of these and other improvements that will be essential to meeting the upcoming demand for new nuclear deployments.” Now, all that remains of the Hermes 2 CPA review is the Commission’s mandatory hearing. Kairos Power’s application will be the first to employ the NRC’s recently approved, simplified mandatory hearing procedures, designed to reduce the administrative burden while maintaining clarity and openness in the process. Kairos Power applauds the NRC staff for its thoroughness and speed, concluding the Hermes 2 Safety Evaluation and Environmental Reviews in record time. On to the home stretch!
