About us
Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research (DOR) is one of the nation’s largest research facilities outside of a government or university setting. Our studies cover a wide range of clinical topics, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, substance abuse, mental health, maternal and child health, and women’s health. Our research addresses broad issues, including the role of genes and the environment in health, the influence of behavior on disease prevention and chronic illness management, drug safety, health care policy, health services delivery, and disparities. The Division is currently home to 66 research scientists and staff scientists, 11 research fellows, and nearly 640 employees. The DOR also has 47 adjunct investigators from within Kaiser Permanente and other academic institutions. DOR’s scientists are involved in 585 ongoing research projects and its Clinical Trials Program supports and guides 345 clinical trials. Since 2000, DOR researchers have published more than 6,500 peer-reviewed articles, including 575 papers in 2022 alone.

The findings of our new study, published in JAMA Health Forum, found that high racial residential segregation was associated with depression and aniexty among Black pregnant individuals. These findings are pivotal to our understanding of how structural racism is associated to mental health conditions in pregnancy and the continued Black-White disparity in health outcomes. Thank you to my mentor Lyndsay Avalos , co-led author Sylvia Badon and all the co-authors for their hard work! Thank you Kaiser Permanente Division of Research for creating a platform for health equity research!

Great collaboration in cancer research between the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research and The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. on display at #ASCOQLTY24!
The best synergies happen when our clinician researchers and trainees join with our Division of Research investigators! Our IM residency programs and heme-onc fellowship teamed up with the DOR to lead multiple posters this year at ASCO Quality 2024 (#ASCOQLTY24!): improving vaccination rates, patient-centered communication around goals of care, showing the time toxicity of care at the end of life, mapping out the high burden of emergency room visits for cancer pain, and more!

Our researcher Kelly Young-Wolff, PhD, MPH is a member of the NASEM Health and Medicine Division committee that today released a new report on the need for consistent public health response to cannabis use as state and local regulation quickly evolves. The report calls for leadership at the federal level, makes specific recommendations for needed research, and more. Access the report and supporting materials: https://lnkd.in/gQctVJVG Dr. Young-Wolff’s research focuses on substance use, focusing specifically on cannabis use among pregnant persons and on the impact of changes in local, state, and national policy. Her research interests also include investigating how stress and trauma, genetic factors, and health-related policies shape disparities in the onset and course of drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco use, and psychiatric disorders. She is also interested in conducting research to inform the development of effective behavioral interventions for complex patients with multiple co-occurring psychiatric and addictive disorders.
