About us
Located in Wanatah, Indiana, Kankakee Valley REMC is a membership cooperative delivering power to more than 18,000 residential and commercial members in the rural areas of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Marshall, Pulaski, St. Joseph and Starke counties. Kankakee Valley REMC is a non-profit member cooperative. This means that our members are also owners of the cooperative and therefore are entitled to many benefits. These benefits include democratic control through the election of fellow members to the board of directors, strength in numbers through the collaboration of other cooperatives both locally and nationally and as owners our members enjoy the return of margins (“profits”) in the form of capital credits. The mission of Kankakee Valley REMC is to exceed the expectation of our cooperative family. We will strengthen our cooperative community by encouraging trust, education and an open forum for ideas. Staying true to our founding philosophy of serving those who would not otherwise be served, we will build opportunities for generations to come.

October is Co-op Month! This month, we celebrate the heart of cooperatives: our commitment to the community. Yesterday, our amazing team rolled up their sleeves at Creekside Trails, where we spent the day enhancing this beautiful 13+ miles of biking, hiking, and walking trails. We built new features for the Kids Loop, replaced boardwalks, trimmed trees, and cleared debris. Now, the trails are all set for families and residents to enjoy the stunning fall weather! A big thank you to everyone who joined us in making a difference.

⚡ Exciting News!!! Kankakee Valley REMC is thrilled to announce that we have “flipped the switch” and our Yellow River substation in Knox is now live! This substation will power the west and south sides of Knox, ensuring a more reliable and efficient supply of electricity for our members. As we continue to support the growing demands in the area, this substation is a vital step in enhancing reliability and flexibility for our grid. In the coming weeks, we’ll transition members to the new substation and strive to minimize outages. Some scheduled outages may be needed for crew safety. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
