Seeing education innovation take root right here in Wichita is inspiring. The grand opening of Learning Lab Wichita was so exciting… a brand new collaborative space where education entrepreneurs advance personalized learning models designed to help every student find their unique gift. From micro-schools prepping student-led seminars to community groups offering culinary, art, and tech programs, this hub will generate new models for student-driven learning. The team has done an outstanding job building partnerships to ensure strong utilization and engagement from day one. This school year, students are participating in programs through Wichita Independent Secular Educators, Creative Minds, Khan Lab School Wichita, and Guiding Light Academy. As a parent, I know firsthand how each child learns differently, and the potential they hold when given the right opportunities. Learning Lab Wichita is a great example of what happens when we empower entrepreneurs to find new ways to solve problems — unlocking possibilities for students, teachers, and the entire community.    Great job to everyone involved.

Yesterday we were able to expose over 600 people to STEM activities and learning at the Kansas Aviation Museum with help from our community partners. Our mission is connecting our rich aviation heritage with an innovative future for all, and we accomplished that yesterday in sparking innovation in kids minds. Thank you to everyone who supported our event and came out. #WhereDreamsTakeFlight

The Kansas Aviation Museum is proud to announce our 5th and final 2024 Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame Inductee, Kirby Ortega. Kirby and his wife Teresa own and operate Ortega Aviation Services. Kirby has been involved in flight training for over 40 years. He spent 32 years at Cessna and Textron Aviation and played a key role in their training initiative "We Teach the World to Fly". Additionally, Kirby worked alongside the FAA in the creative of their FAA/Industry Training Standards program, a collaborative effort between the FAA, Industry and Academia. In 2002, the FAA honored Kirby as their National Flight Instructor of the Year. He also received the NBAA Pilot Safety Award, and with over 28,000 incident-free flight hours, Kirby received the FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Kirby continues work as a private pilot and flight instructor. His contributions to flight training have made an impact globally in aviation, and we are thrilled to welcome Kirby Ortega into the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame. You can join us on Tuesday, November 19th for our ceremony.#KansasAviation

Sitting here unwinding from this week, I’m left with several thoughts. First, thank you to Greater Wichita Partnership for allowing me an opportunity to join on this trip. It’s been incredible. I’ve also been able to witness firsthand the incredible work they do, and that starts from the top. Jeff Fluhr is a great person and his vision and leadership has been transformational. Andrew, Cynthia and Evan have phenomenal teams that lead the way for this to happen. Additionally, Lily Wu is a great asset for our community. She tirelessly worked and advocated for us on so many levels. I wish everyone could have seen the work they all have done, including Commissioner Pete Meitzner. Wichita State University and President Rick Muma, National Institute for Aviation Research and John Tomblin, and WSU Tech and Sheree Utash are truly recognized here for their leadership in aviation/aerospace amongst many other areas. We have a bright future in our community, and it’s in part because of these folks. Here is the timeline the Kansas Aviation Museum worked to produce with GWP for the event. #FIA2024

Our 4th inductee this year is Jerry Greteis. Jerry began working alongside fellow Wichita University friends and graduates, Tom Salter and Dwayne Wallace. His first task was alongside Tom on designing the C-34. After a short stink at various companies such as Stearman and Curtiss-Wright, Jerry returned to Cessna as Chief of Structures and then was promoted to chief Engineer in 1953. Jerry passed away suddenly in 1972, but his impact in aviation has had a lasting legacy still seen through the work of Textron Aviation. You can read some of Jerry’s impact in William Thompson’s book “Cessna Wings for the World.” We are excited to welcome Jerry Greteis to the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame.

Our 3rd inductee for the 2024 Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame is Dr. Sheree Utash. Dr. Utash served as the President of Wichita Area Technical College beginning in 2015, and oversaw the successful transition of WATC to WSU Tech. During her tenure, Dr. Utash has overseen the tremendous growth at WSU Tech, becoming the largest technical college in Kansas. Dr. Utash is a constant innovator in education and developing workforce skills necessary for a changing industry. She has collaborated and led with the creation of the Future Ready Center that provides high school students with unique opportunities and training that enables students to leave high school with industry certifications. Additionally, Dr. Utash continues to be a national leader in the conversation of aviation/aerospace education and work trends. Inspiring WSU Tech to continue to innovate to be a national leader. We are excited to welcome Dr. Sheree Utash into the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame. You can get your spot for the November 19th, Kansas Aviation Honor Awards. Don't miss out. #kansas #aviation #aerospace #WSUTech #HallOfFame
