About us

The KBI is the premier investigative agency for the state of Kansas. It assists local law enforcement agencies during major criminal investigations. The KBI also maintains the state's criminal history records, and provides forensic science services to the Kansas criminal justice community. The KBI is committed to its critical mission of preventing crime and enhancing public safety in Kansas. The KBI does not conduct investigations based solely on citizen reports or referrals. Generally, cases originate after a request for assistance from a local law enforcement agency or a prosecutor, or occasionally at the request of the Kansas Attorney General. Do NOT use this page to report a crime. In the event of an emergency, call 911. Report all other criminal activity to your local police department or sheriff's office. To provide tips related to KBI investigations, please call 1-800-KS-Crime, or report suspicious activity at https;//www.kbi.ks.gov/sar. Please do not submit tips via messenger.

  • This week we said farewell and sent well wishes to longtime KBI Assistant Director Tony Weingartner. Tony served in Kansas law enforcement for 32 years, with a total of 28 years dedicated to the KBI. As Assistant Director supervising the KBI’s Investigations Branch, Tony contributed in countless ways to the Kansas law enforcement community. He left his mark at the KBI as an exemplary leader, a respected colleague, and a mentor and friend to so many. He’ll be greatly missed at the KBI and we thank him for his devoted service!

  • September 25 is "If You See Something, Say Something" Awareness Day, a campaign promoted by the Department of Homeland Security to empower and educate the public on the importance of recognizing the signs of suspicious activity. This topic affects all of us. Threats that law enforcement need your help reporting might include: Threats against schools, facilities, or events; Surveillance of facilities or people; Signs of human trafficking indicating a person is not free to leave; Signs of drug activity such as recurring, brief visits to and from a property. The recent threats made to schools around the country are a prime example of why we need public assistance in keeping Kansans safe. Use the KBI online reporting tool at buff.ly/4gGEmfA or call 1-800-KS-CRIME. Call 911 to report an emergency or crime in progress. Spot the Signs. Report the Activity. #SeeSayDay

  • As we wrap up National Forensic Science Week, we recognize the tremendous value that KBI forensic scientists and laboratory professionals add to the criminal justice system and to the citizens of Kansas. We are very proud of our laboratory colleagues and partners for contributing to our public safety mission. Thank you to the Dr. Schneider and Dr. Norman of KU for presenting their findings and expertise on the "Bloody Benders" case. A special thank you also to the committee that planned forensic science week and ensured employees had a fun, memorable and educational time with coworkers. #NFSW2024 #forensicscience

  • Members of our High Risk Warrant Team (HRWT) recently attended the Careers on Wheels event in Fredonia. Students had the opportunity to gain insights into law enforcement and the role of KBI in criminal investigations. They were also able to climb inside an HRWT vehicle. These events are valuable for students to explore their interests and potential future career paths.

  • Today is National Police Woman Day! Please join us in recognizing the many female police officers who work tirelessly to combat crime and ensure justice is served. Today we celebrate their enormous contributions to our Kansas communities. National Police Woman Day is also an opportunity to affirm our desire for a future where law enforcement agencies have stronger female representation. While women make up around half of the population, nationally only around 12% of police officers are female. At the KBI, we are proud that over 20% of our special agents are women, but we hope this percentage will continue to grow. We are grateful for those women who have paved the way for others by being extraordinary mentors, role models, and leaders at the KBI. Happy National Police Woman Day to all strong, dedicated and courageous female law enforcement officers!
