Simple Project Concepts!! Cruise control and Art of Project Scheduling Driving on a straight highway while having your vehicle cruise control on is a pleasant experience. You just set the speed and the vehicle does the rest, no hassle but just keep the car in the lane. It sounds easy. Flying an airplane on Autopilot mode should be pleasant (Although I have not tried myself) of course it is much more complicated than your vehicle cruise control. The pilot set the destination and other features and the navigation system along with other aircraft systems do the rest. It looks easy to set the destination once and navigation system does the rest, but it is not as easy as you see. The navigation system checks and re-aligns itself every single second to ensure the aircraft is on the right path towards the destination. In fact, you shall differentiate between your expectations and reality. Your expectation is: When you set the airplane on autopilot mode, everything will go as was planned! The reality is: The system re-adjusts itself thousands of times every minute to ensure it is on track. Well, the same applies to any project. We all know most of the projects do not go as they were scheduled originally as project is a dynamic environment that many parameters are changing continuously. It may not be unfair to say that your project schedule likely changes the moment you are done with project baseline and probably printing it! This may sound pessimistic but the is the fact. Continuous re-adjustment of project schedule baseline is likely more practical rather than pushing to stick with original scheduled dates. It is important to prepare a project baseline schedule that is well thought and prepared for which I always admire it but the KEY to achieving the project targets is how well your schedule responds and how flexible it is against the changes during project life cycle. The project schedules that are revised more frequently assumed to be more realistic in comparison to its opposite. Revising the project schedule is part of the project evolution during its life cycle and is more valuable as they have absorbed the changes and are contemporary road map of the project. The Art of Project Scheduling is not about preparing a solid project baseline, but it is about preparing a schedule that has been tested by potential what-if scenarios and also how well they are revised and updated during the project life cycle, just same as autopilot systems! #KARAconsults #projectmanagement #Construction #projectscheduling #projectcontrol https://lnkd.in/gwKbv7mM

Insightful Diane. Thank you for sharing this. Dealing with Time Impact Analysis is difficult for most of the schedulers. it looks easy at first but the devil is in details. Being involved in delay/disruption claims or dispute and utilized different Time Impact methodologies is one part but as you well said more importantly is using all such techniques in a right path that reflects the true image of delays caused by each party.

When I first started learning construction scheduling, I wanted to improve our: 1) Schedule accuracy 2) Focus on critical & near critical tasks 3) Transparent communication between stakeholders But I got sucked into: 4) Getting frustrated 5) Not knowing where to start with delays 6) Writing 100s of pages of schedule documents 7) Arguing about whose fault/responsibility the issues were It nearly killed my ability to do my job, and do it well. And it will kill yours too if you have the mindset: There’s no time to focus on the most critical tasks. There’s no time to follow the schedule’s data. There’s no time to talk to your team. You will burn out as a scheduler. What if I told you there's a better way? → To focus and prioritize critical & near-critical tasks. → To have simple 1-2 page schedule documents everyone can use. → To have transparent communication between the contractor, the owner, and the construction team. We once worked on a half-billion dollar construction program, joining the owner from the very start. Implementing these practices daily, we had 0 owner delays that otherwise would’ve cost them millions. How? We were present throughout the process and established simple and prioritized processes from the start. Interested in schedule support for your project? DM me ”SCHEDULE" and I’ll share the details.

Through several years of experience and involvement in projects across wide range of industries there are FACTS that do not change despite of where, which and what type of project you are in: if you squeeze the architect/engineer bid price and keep it tight (even if the architect/engineer is your alliance partner) the architect still deliver the design package and you have saved some costs and feel satisfied! but the design is likely prepared by less experienced team or an experienced team has been handling another project to offset their low price which seems not to be your business, however it directly impact the design quality. The design quality does not come to the picture at the end of detailed design stage but DURING CONSTRUCTION. That's the point where project gets hit by RFIs that lead to continuous Change Order Requests, All such change orders increase overall project cost, changes in sequence of the works and likely time impact! whether you have entered into a lump sum form of contract or GMP does not cover you for such additional costs. The Key fact is that design error costs are so high and can't be recovered or back-charged and client will likely absorb it at the end of the day. Here is where you loose all the savings on design package cost and end up with much higher time and cost impact. We recommend to keep your design budget reasonable and with much deeper knowledge on how your preferred design office operates, review and release the drawings. #KARAConsults #Lessons_learned #Construction #Scheduling #ProjectControl #Constructionmanagement #ConstructionContract
