Reflections from Kataly's Mindfulness and Healing Justice Program Officer Iris Garcia on the event we co-hosted celebrating the release of What it Takes to Heal by Prentis Hemphill. Read more 👇🏼 .
I am still experiencing the afterglow from gathering last week with The Embodiment Institute, BE-IMAGINATIVE, Kataly Foundation and our philanthropic comrades to celebrate the release of What it Takes to Heal by Prentis Hemphill. Kasha Ho invited us to begin by reinhabiting our bodies through somatic practice, Prentis and Donna Bransford stimulated our intellects through their discussion of healing justice as an intervention & practice to support thriving social movements, and SOL Development activated our emotions and touched our souls through their musical ceremonial tribute. I am so grateful to be in community with these phenomenal leaders that hold their healing assignments with such care, intention and joy. Some of the ideas shared that I am still contemplating: > The centrality of relationships: if we know that they can break up our movements, then we are admitting that they are critical and worthy of investing in. Do we see this reflected in philanthropic priorities? > Allowing ourselves to be implicated: for those of us in philanthropy, how is our unprocessed hurt getting in the way of our ability to see what could be possible? How could it be curtailing the creativity needed in this moment? > The integration of inner and outer work: letting go of the either/or binary allows us to commit to our own healing, the healing of our lineage, and the transforming of our communities and systems. Thank you to everyone that brought your presence, smiles and tears. Special appreciation to Ayesha Walker and Debasri Ghosh for your trust and dedication.
