At Kaufman Music Center, we strongly believe that music education doesn't just touch lives, it transforms them. Our students and alums have gone on to become celebrated professional musicians, artists, educators and leaders in business, technology, medicine and finance as well as the arts. So when Bloomberg Philanthropies and Studio Institute reached out to offer our students the opportunity to intern at some of NYC's top cultural organizations, we had to answer the call! Special Music School High School seniors Skyler Spivey and Vianna Hamidi joined a cohort of an amazing group of interns this summer as part of the Bloomberg Arts Internship program. Thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies and Studio Institute, who are helping us shape the next generation of arts leaders. 👏👏 📷 Bloomberg Philanthropies

Kaufman Music Center’s Executive Director, Kate Sheeran, will depart on July 1 to become the next Dean of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. Under Kate’s game-changing leadership, the Center has experienced transformational growth: we launched the celebrated Musical Storefronts initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic; we established an Artist-in-Residence program bringing professional musicians into our classrooms; we inaugurated the Pathways program to give students from under-resourced communities access to intensive music education; and we launched new strategic partnerships and nearly doubled the Center’s endowment. While the Center conducts a nationwide search to identify its next leader, Igal Kesselman, Director of Lucy Moses School and Special Music School, and Chief Operating Officer Emily Grant will assume co-leadership roles of the institution. The entire Kaufman Music Center community extends its heartfelt thanks to Kate for her transformational leadership and looks forward to celebrating her in the coming months.

Kaufman Music Center is deeply grateful to the City of New York for its significant capital investment in our HVAC system. This incredibly generous support will enable essential renovations that will make the teaching and learning spaces of our home, the Abraham Goodman House, safer and more comfortable so that students, artists and audience members of all ages and backgrounds can experience the joy of music and the performing arts for many years to come. We thank Mayor Eric Adams, Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Laurie Cumbo, the New York City Council and Council Member Gale A. Brewer, and Manhattan Borough President Mark D. Levine for this vital investment.   Photo: Manhattan-based DCLA capital grantees celebrate at The Africa Center on November 16.
