Limited funding for research, poor infrastructure, and a lack of training to develop skilled neuroimaging researchers has led to a big gap in brain data from African populations. To close this gap, Damien Eke and Eberechi Wogu co-founded the African Brain Data Network. With support from The Kavli Foundation and in collaboration with the Neuroscience Society of Nigeria, Eke developed a 2-week program, called the African Brain Data Science Academy, which aims to teach early-career researchers in Africa about Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable neuroimaging data. https://ow.ly/MtZL50T639F

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI). Major MKI projects have included space telescopes and ground-based instruments that have greatly advanced astrophysics, including TESS, a groundbreaking exoplanet hunter that launched in 2018. Initiatives in the coming years include new telescopes with primary mirrors in the 20- to 30-meter range, giving them multiple times the resolving power of JWST. Read more about these instruments and director Robert Simcoe’s vision for the institute. https://lnkd.in/gAYsyjuf

On the occasion of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics celebrating its 20th anniversary, KICP director Abigail Vieregg looks back at past successes (including the Dark Energy Survey and the South Pole Telescope) and forward to new opportunities, including RNO-G (Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland), which is under construction and will use hardware built at UChicago, and PUEO (Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations), which is set to launch next year aboard a balloon that will fly over Antarctica. https://ow.ly/s3Og50T1rrj

Congratulations to Nik Kliapets, a Kavli Scholar, on graduating with a master’s in artificial intelligence, with a focus on novel machine learning applications in astrophysics. 🎓
PhD Student & Kavli Scholar in Machine Learning for Astrophysics @ KU Leuven | Master in Space Studies & AI
Today I am very excited to announce that I have graduated from M.Sc. in AI at KU Leuven 🤖 This was a very challenging year for me for many reasons, and this programme was a step very much outside of my comfort zone (and now it is my comfort zone, how wild is that?). It was not easy but I often say that easy is boring, which is a saying that my mother really dislikes but oh well 😁 Naturally, it would not have been possible for me to do all of it without the support of my amazing supervisors, friends, and family. I am grateful for everyone’s kind words and support throughout this year, it means a lot. I would also like to once again thank The Kavli Foundation for the scholarship that has allowed me to pursue this programme. I am looking forward to continuing research on machine learning for asteroseismology that I started this year 💪🏼🔥 To wrap up, doing new things is scary but also extremely exciting. Dare step into the unknown, there might be something great waiting for you there. Ad astra 🚀

Which exoplanets could be habitable? How can we trace signs of life in the universe? 🌌 These are two of the many fascinating questions being answered by several incredible scientists supported by The Kavli Foundation as a part of our #Scialog series. Two of those scientists are Sukrit Ranjan and Rebecca Rapf. 🪐 Ranjan is an assistant professor in the Department of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona, and is a planetary photochemist. Ranjan studies molecular systems and radiation to understand the presence of life on planets. 🪐 Rapf is an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department at Trinity University, and is a physical chemist. Rapf is interested in using laboratory studies to learn more about atmospheric chemistry, planetary science, biophysics, and astrobiology. https://lnkd.in/gB2dWWgh

The deadline is approaching for applications to join a scientific community of 50 interdisciplinary researchers working to understand how neural systems adapt to rapidly changing environments. Apply by September 1st, 2024. Tag or share this with someone you think should apply.
Apply by Sept. 1 for full consideration to participate as a Fellow at the first meeting of #Scialog: Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems in March 2025. The series aims to catalyze research to explore neurobiological response to change and advance our understanding of the brain’s chemistry, physiology, and adaptation mechanisms. - with The Kavli Foundation, the Paul G. We agree — meet your heroes! Thank you for joining us at the Kavli Foundation Biennial Assembly.
Had an amazing time at the The Kavli Foundation bienniel assembly! Happy to talk about our Kavli Institute Innovation Award on Quantum Materials for broadband Quantum Transduction! Also, it was amazing to meet Frances Arnold, Nobel laureate in Chemistry and generally amazing and inspiring person! Sometimes it is wonderful to meet your heroes! Thanks to Jeffrey Miller and Amy Bernard for giving me the opportunity! #science #sciencefunding #Quantum #quantumcomputing #quantumtransduction #quantumnetwork #philanthropy #kavli

Ethical considerations and public engagement take scientific discoveries out of the lab and directly to the communities who will be impacted by the findings. But why are those two steps often an afterthought? The Kavli Foundation invites Letters of Interest (LOIs) for projects to explore ethical considerations, understand public sentiment, and/or engage the public about the potential impacts and benefits of a basic science research project. Check out the opportunity and apply by September 16th, 2024:
