An estimated 32 million companies are now facing new compliance obligations due to the Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”), which aims to enhance transparency in corporate ownership and curb money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes. The CTA, which took effect on January 1, 2024, represents a significant shift in the ownership information reporting obligations of corporations, limited liability companies and other business entities covered by the CTA. Our Lafayette Summer Associates and attorneys enjoyed a day on False River on Saturday. Friendship, food, and fun were had by all. We are looking forward to their last two weeks at Kean Miller and all that they will accomplish when they return to law school. 

For 17 years, Kean Miller has held the “Kean Miller Connection,” a full day law school preparatory program for college students, with the goal to “connect” students with information helpful to their decision to attend law school and become an attorney. Last week, we held our 17th annual Kean Miller Connection. Eligible participants for the KMC are those college students who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, programs, and values during college, through employment, or within the community; those who have a history of overcoming obstacles affecting their educational journey; and those who bring a unique perspective to law school and the legal community based on their experiences as an individual, including the challenges overcome, skills built, or lessons learned that have shaped the applicant’s identity. Participants in the KMC learned from a wide variety of speakers, including ExxonMobil Supervising Counsel, Latasha McDade, law school administration and professors, attorneys with varying practices and career paths, and Kean Miller partners and associates. The Louisiana Legislature recently made substantial changes to the Louisiana Direct Action Statute, which is codified at Louisiana Revised Statute § 22:1269. Effective August 1, 2024, and pursuant to Act 275 of the 2024 Regular Legislative Session, the new law substantially limits the right of an injured person to sue another party’s insurer and to make the jury aware of the presence of insurance. On June 28, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Kean Miller’s Victor Gregoire will serve on the faculty of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel’s 2024 Young Lawyers’ Boot Camp held August 2-3.
