Rescue Food. Nourish Neighbors.

About us

Keep Austin Fed is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that helps feed hungry people by rescuing perishable surplus food from commercial kitchens and grocery stores, thereby also keeping this food out of the waste stream. Keep Austin Fed provides pickup services for food donors, delivery services for recipient organizations, and this transportation conforms to industry food safety standards. Keep Austin Fed is a rapidly growing organization, obtaining 501c3 status in February of 2014 and rescuing over 375,000 pounds of food by the end of that year. In 2017, we rescued over 700,000 pounds. Volunteers enjoy the ability to make real impact in their immediate communities with commitments of about 1 hour of time. We can always use more volunteers (individuals or in groups) and food donations. Please see our web site for more details on what we are doing and how you can help.

If you vote, live, work, or provide services in Austin, you’ll want to check this out! Every day, our member organizations provide essential services to thousands of Central Texans including food access, transitional housing, aging services, and more. As part of our efforts to engage local leadership, we prepared six questions for all eligible 2024 Austin Mayoral and City Council candidates. We are interested in understanding how they have supported the nonprofit sector in the past and how they plan to support it moving forward, should they be elected or re-elected. Thank you to the Candidates who took the time to respond. Answers are provided in the document below for the interest of our member organizations, who work closely with their communities and local representatives. In the wake of #NationalNonprofitDay, imagine a day not only without our organization, but without all local nonprofits. Keep Austin Fed is part of One Voice Central Texas, a coalition of nearly 100 nonprofit organizations in health and human services (HHS). This video represents "A Day Without..." about only 5% of the HHS nonprofits in the greater Austin area. Please help support our nonprofits and our neighbors.

Happy National Nonprofit Day! We know it's tomorrow, but we're just too excited to share our new video. As part of our Day Without Nonprofits campaign, we'd love for you to watch and share. For our Day Without Nonprofits campaign we've gathered data, stories, and interviews from 44 nonprofit organizations in the Austin area to showcase their impact on a single day. What would our community look like if we didn't have health and human service nonprofits? These organizations strengthen their communities by offering essential preventive and supportive services, helping families and individuals thrive. Through our campaign, we encourage you to DONATE your time or money, LEARN about your local nonprofits, ADVOCATE for policies that support them, and SHARE posts from the organizations you're passionate about. Once you've watched our video, head to our member directory, linked in the comments, to start checking out the impactful nonprofits in your community! #ovct #austin #centraltexas #nonprofits #volunteering #advocacy https://lnkd.in/gdTf47aD

The City and County continue to lean more on area nonprofits every day to provide much needed services in our communities, but without funding to assist them. These infographics represent the impact of only about 5% of the health and human service nonprofits in Austin and surrounding areas. As National Nonprofit Day approaches, please consider what our community would look like if these nonprofits had to shut their doors. And then please consider giving your time, talent, and treasure to continue providing a thriving community. Thank you, One Voice Central Texas, for pulling this collective impact data together!

National Nonprofit Day is this Saturday, August 17! This annual celebration highlights both the incredible impact and the ongoing needs of nonprofits across the country. This week, One Voice Central Texas is launching a campaign to explore what our community would look like if nonprofits disappeared for just one day. To commemorate National Nonprofit Day, we've gathered data, stories, and interviews from 44 nonprofit organizations in the Austin area to showcase their impact on a single day. With public and private funding becoming more competitive - driven by a 22% increase in Texas nonprofits over the past decade - and individual donations and volunteerism still in a decline due to the pandemic, many impactful organizations are being forced to limit services, lay off staff, or even close their doors. When nonprofits are unable to provide preventive services and other means of support, our community and neighbors suffer. Through our campaign, we encourage you to consider donating your time or money, learning about your local nonprofits, advocating for policies that support them, and sharing posts from the organizations you care about. Through images and video, we’ll be highlighting just how essential these organizations are to the health and safety of our community. Remember, the numbers we share are based on the daily impact of just 44 nonprofits in the Austin area – imagine the impact of all 800+ local health and human service nonprofits. A special thank you to Cherry Youn, our Spring Research Fellow through the UT CONNECT Program. We ask that you please share this post, and stay tuned for our campaign video launching on Friday! For 20 years, we've been keeping nutritious food from ending up in landfills and ensuring it reaches the hands of our neighbors who can use it most. What began as a grassroots initiative blossomed into our official 501(c)(3) status a decade ago. Remarkably, some of our dedicated volunteers have been with us since this "official" beginning. Discover what motivates them to return week after week!

We are thrilled to have our Executive Director featured in this month's Austin Woman Magazine. There is much to be done to correct the food system - locally, nationally, and globally - and we know that fighting food waste and food insecurity is just one piece of that puzzle. We share this honor with everyone who works toward a solution. Thank you, Brandi Clark Burton, for bringing this discussion to light. https://lnkd.in/gs6SsBiZ

Executive Director at Keep Austin Fed

What a great night last night at the Impact Austin Town Hall where we learned that we were awarded the Fall 2023 Health and Well-Being Grant to help us replicate the success of our east Austin hub in south Austin. Really great keynote speech from Sara Lomelin at Philanthropy Together talking about the power of philanthropic "giving circles" to empower smaller and grassroots organization was an added bonus to the big check. 😁
