With Hurricane Hillary tracking up the California coast, we're watching the waves and currents as closely as we can from Portland, Maine: Working with Ocean Rainforest, University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, and UC Irvine, our engineers Nate Baker and William Ntsoane deployed acoustic instruments to measure waves and currents and load cells to measure forces on the first offshore seaweed farm in the US. We're hoping the best for all communities in Hilary's path; we're also hoping for some big waves and strong currents in SoCal so we can get an unprecedented glimpse into how a system this size responds to storm conditions, and further validate our numerical models of large seaweed farms. A lot of hours and hard work goes into each one of these deployments. A big thanks to ARPA-E for recognizing the need for this work, and to everyone who made this possible! #hurricanehilary #seaweed #ocean #engineering Simon Freeman Katherine Liu Slater, Ph.D., Eliza Harrison, Javier Infante, David Fredriksson, Damian Brady, Kate Liberti, Zach Miller-Hope, Kristen Davis, Geno Pawlak

Kelson Marine is now part of the TEAMER network! If you're a technology developer looking for expertise, TEAMER’s #RFTS15 is now accepting applications through February 7, 2025. This is the time to connect with us to explore how we can support your vision in marine energy! We can do: o Advanced WEC design and optimization. o Mooring design for tidal and wave energy converters. o Rigorous site characterization for annual energy production and extreme design cases. o System Integration and IEC technical specification design.
This #TEAMERTuesday, we're excited to introduce one of our newest facility network members, Kelson Marine Co., out of Portland, Maine. Kelson brings decades of experience in #WaveEnergy and #TidalEnergy, and a suite of state-of-the-art modeling and analysis tools. Kelson's core capabilities for TEAMER include: • Current, bathymetry and site data analysis • Extreme event modeling • Finite element analysis (FEA) modeling • Fluid-structure interaction modeling • IEC technical specification design • Mooring dynamics simulation • Ocean testing plan design • Wave resource characterization • WEC hydrodynamics Check out Kelson's page on our site for more information on how they can help realize your #MarineEnergy ideas: https://lnkd.in/gqNCw-VN As a reminder, TEAMER's #RFTS15 is accepting applications through February 7, 2025. Now's a great time to reach out to pre-consult with a facility! All images courtesy of Kelson Marine Co.

📸 Mid-July snapshots of our sugar kelp (S. latissima) on the most exposed ocean cultivation unit at Gøtuvík, Faroe Islands. 🌊 These 10m vertical grow-lines were seeded on January 10, 2024, and the kelp still has 6-8 weeks to grow before harvest! 🌱💧 #KelpFarming #SustainableAgriculture #FaroeIslands #OceanFarming #Seaweed #Aquaculture

This past winter's storms broke records in the Gulf of Maine. But they were within our predicted 50-year values, demonstrating the robustness of our risk quantification methods that we bring to our projects here at Kelson Marine. Quantifying environmental risk at exposed coastal ocean sites is crucial for open-ocean aquaculture and marine renewables. A key tool in our analysis is the calculation of return probability contours, which allow us to understand the likelihood of various extreme events occurring together. For the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System Buoy E01, off Monhegan Island, this 50-year contour of wave and current values shows that the 50- and 10-year combinations typically prescribed by standards are well outside the actual 50-year environmental contour (see figure below; difference between red triangles and 3D surface). This type of rigorous risk quantification, combined with precision engineering, helps unlock the ability to design ocean structures that are simultaneously safe AND cost effective.
