  • Growing up as an immigrant in America was difficult for Isaiah. His mom was left to raise a 2-week-old and 5-year-old in a strange land with no friends or family to help after Isaiah's dad passed away. His mother remarried shortly after, but despite a little more family stability at home, Isaiah faced relentless bullying and harassment at school. The constant torment led Isaiah to become suicidal and express a desire to end his life. But Isaiah’s story doesn’t end there. With the support of our community-based programs at Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes, he found the strength to overcome the effects of bullying. Isaiah took on a job, excelled in school, and even earned a full-ride scholarship to college. Isaiah's journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support and resources, it's possible to rise above the challenges of bullying and thrive. KyUMH is dedicated to helping children like Isaiah find hope and achieve their dreams. #NationalBullyingPreventionMonth #StopBullying #KYUMH #nonprofit #childrenshome

  • What is bullying, and how common is it? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education, bullying consists of three core elements: unwanted aggressive behavior, observed or perceived power imbalance, and repetition or high likelihood of repetition of bullying behaviors. Bullying is a serious issue that affects many children and teens in Kentucky. In a survey of public and private middle school students conducted as part of the 2023 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Youth Risk Behavior, 41% reported being bullied in person while 29% said they were bullied online. In high school, 22.5% of students surveyed reported being bullied in person and 18.3% said they were bullied online. We recognize there's still a lot of work ahead of us to reduce and ultimately end bullying. By coming together as a community, we can make a significant impact and create a safer, more inclusive environment for our children. #NationalBullyingPreventionMonth #StopBullying #KYUMH #nonprofit #childrenshome

  • "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." 🌈 Life's moments are not always filled with sunshine. Maya Angelou’s words remind us that even on these cloudy days, we can choose to shine brightly—to be that unexpected burst of color in someone else’s sky. This stunning photo, taken by one of our talented staff members right here on campus, is a great reminder of our mission to serve Kentucky youth and the unwavering support from you, our benefactors. #KYUMH #nonprofit #childrenshome #donatetoday #FifthSunday

  • As we remember the events of September 11th, let's also consider the impact it had on our littlest hearts—children. In a study of more than 8,000 public school children, researchers documented generalized levels of distress became part of the lives of children going to schools well beyond the immediate area of the 9/11 attacks. Probable PTSD was identified in roughly 11% of NYC schoolchildren, probable depression was identified in roughly 8%, and probable conduct disorder was identified in roughly 13%. Children also react to mass-traumatic experiences not only related to geographic proximity but also through what they witness on TV. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing the needs of our youth in the aftermath of disasters. Today, let’s reaffirm our commitment to nurturing children’s mental health. Let’s listen to their stories, validate their feelings, and create safe spaces for them to express their fears and hopes. SOURCE: https://zurl.co/w08k #september11th #neverforget #KYUMH

  • When a young person decides to take responsibility for their education, it’s an amazing thing to watch. That’s what happened to a former client of ours, Liam*. Liam was struggling in school when we met him. At home, Liam had an unhealthy relationship with his father, which contributed to his anxiety. He found it hard to focus in school and rein in his impulsive behaviors. Liam fell behind in his classes and was facing having to repeat his senior year of high school. Our community-based staff visited him at school regularly to encourage him. Liam learned coping skills for his anxiety and started to realize just how much he wanted to be an independent adult. “It was like a switch flipped,” his case manager Kayla says. With just a few months left before graduation, Liam asked Kayla to help him graduate on time. She rallied his school counselor and teachers around him, giving Liam extra encouragement. Kayla made sure Liam had quiet uninterrupted space to do his work. Watching Liam walk across the stage was hugely fulfilling. “It was a really great accomplishment for him to graduate high school,” Kayla says. Now, Liam has many goals for his future and is looking into learning a trade. Liam is just one of many youth who you are helping! When you support KyUMH, you are opening doors to career opportunities, new experiences, and higher self-esteem for Kentucky youth. Help open a door for children like Liam.
