Supporting children through and beyond a parent's cancer nationwide.

About us

Kesem is the leading national nonprofit supporting children facing a parent’s cancer. Founded in 2000, Kesem’s community consists of more than 5,000 volunteer college student leaders at over 130 college chapters across the country, providing year-round programs and services for children ages 6-18 at no cost to families. Its flagship program, Camp Kesem, is a week-long, sleep-away summer camp. Beyond camp, Kesem provides a continuum of touchpoints for campers and their families. Kesem is funded entirely by generous donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations. For 25 years, Kesem has been committed to creating supportive communities and transformative experiences for children who have a parent with cancer or have lost a parent to cancer. In that time, more than 200,000 student leaders, volunteers, donors, and supporters have joined us in creating meaningful moments and memories in the lives of more than 60,000 children and their families nationwide. Today, our sleepaway camp experiences, afternoon programs, and virtual meet-up offerings provide more pathways for these children and their families to create moments and memories that will last a lifetime. We continue to dream of a tomorrow where no child has to face a parent’s cancer. Until there is a cure, Kesem will be by their side, no matter what. 💙 On our 25th anniversary, we invite you to share in these special moments that have made us, and make us, who we are. Join us in celebrating Kesem today, Kesem forever, Kesem Everlasting. Join us in ushering in a new chapter of leadership at Kesem. CEO Alicia Kabir is departing after a seven-year tenure that spearheaded growth, innovation, and enhanced programmatic support and services for children and families facing a parent’s cancer. Under Alicia’s leadership, Kesem expanded its geographic footprint by 50% and delivered transformational experiences to more than 65,000 children nationwide. To facilitate a successful CEO transition, Alicia will continue as a Strategic Advisor. Kesem parent and former Board Chair Jay Stilwell has been appointed the new CEO of Kesem. Jay is an accomplished business and marketing leader with more than 25 years of industry experience. He first became involved with Kesem nine years ago when, after his wife's passing, he registered his daughter for Kesem’s flagship summer camp program, Camp Kesem, at Kesem at UC Berkeley. Jay later joined the Kesem National Board of Directors and most recently served as Board Chair since 2021. “I am honored to be selected as the next CEO of Kesem and to build on Alicia’s exceptional leadership,” said Jay. “As a parent of a Kesem camper, I have witnessed firsthand the confidence, resilience, and connection that Kesem programs create. As a former Board Chair, I know the strength of this organization, and I understand the opportunity to support more of the 5 million children in the US whose lives have been impacted by their parent’s cancer. My goal as Kesem’s new leader is to expand our impact, evolve and enhance our programs, and broaden our reach so more kids from all walks of life have access to the magic of Kesem.”
